In recent years, virtual reality has become more common in designing cars. Engineers can work together from different places, creating 3D models. When it came to making the SuperTruck 2, American truck company Kenworth took a unique approach. Instead of using virtual reality, they were inspired by movies like “Judge Dredd” and “Blade Runner 2049.” They told their engineers, “Make us a truck that looks like it belongs in these movies.” And so, they created what might be the most futuristic Class 8 truck.

The SuperTruck 2 is part of a project by the U.S. Department of Energy to make freight trucks more efficient. Kenworth, along with Volvo, Daimler, Navistar, and Peterbilt, joined this project. Kenworth’s SuperTruck 2 is the latest addition to this initiative, and it stands out for its futuristic design.

The goal of the SuperTruck 1 was to make trucks 50% more efficient compared to a 2009 model. For the SuperTruck 2, the aim was another 50% improvement, for a total of 100%. Freight efficiency measures how much weight a truck can carry, considering its weight and fuel efficiency.

Kenworth claims they have achieved a remarkable 136% improvement in freight efficiency compared to the 2009 model. They achieved this through various innovations, including a more efficient engine and transmission, improved aerodynamics, and reducing the weight of the truck.

One significant advancement is the use of a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which helps power various components of the truck. The design also includes features like a lower front end and digital mirrors to reduce drag, along with using fewer tires with lower rolling resistance.

Inside, the SuperTruck 2 resembles the Tesla Semi, with a central seating position and a large screen. However, it also includes features for long-haul journeys, such as a sleeper cabin with a dinette area and a Murphy bed. A lithium-ion battery provides power when the truck is parked overnight.

While the SuperTruck 2 showcases impressive technology, the question remains about its practicality and commercialization. Kenworth acknowledges that not all features may make it to production immediately but aims to develop technologies that could be refined and implemented in future commercial vehicles.
