Richard Rawlings, the driving force behind Gas Monkey Garage, has set his sights on revitalizing a 1979 Ford F-100 Ranger Lariat, particularly the short-bed model. He aims for a complete overhaul, planning to install a new engine and transmission while ensuring every detail is meticulously refined to turn heads both on the road and at car shows.
Even with all of the improvements, Rawlings decides not to paint the truck again and instead restores the original chrome, keeping the truck’s antique character. His crew sets out to complete the job in the allotted 35 days, but as they get started, they discover a dead cylinder with no compression, which means the engine has to be replaced. After that, the truck is deconstructed down to its frame, preparing it to be transformed into a high-performance vehicle.
After much deliberation, Richard decides on the inside color, and the crew proceeds to paint the firewall and begin constructing the pedals. They scramble to get the wiring and other final touches done before time runs out.
Beginning with the installation of black leather seats featuring high bolstering, they proceed to wrap the dashboard and steering wheel in luxurious Alcantara. The upgrades continue with digital gauges, a modern air conditioning system, and an impressive stereo setup complete with subwoofers. Despite challenges with exhaust placement, Richard insists on a design that complements the vehicle’s new performance capabilities.
By maintaining the truck’s original patina while incorporating cutting-edge enhancements, they achieve a stunning blend of classic and contemporary elements. Now boasting the appearance and sound of a drag racer, the completed truck not only fulfills Richard’s vision but also captures significant attention.
