Renault announced that it will work with a Chinese engineering company to create new Twingo cars. These cars will be priced below 20,000 euros, which is about $21,676. European carmakers want to make smaller and cheaper electric cars to compete with Chinese companies.
A spokesperson from Renault’s Ampere electric vehicles division said, “We are working quickly to develop the new Twingo. We aim to finish development in two years.” They also said, “We are partnering with a Chinese engineering company to help us develop the car faster and cheaper. The project is managed by Ampere. The design and engineering work will be done in France, and the cars will be made in Europe, as planned.”
Earlier, Renault and Volkswagen had talked about making an affordable electric version of the Twingo together. But they ended those discussions.
Renault chose a Chinese partner for the sub-20,000 euros Twingo independently of its decision with Volkswagen.
European carmakers want to make smaller electric cars that cost less than 20,000 euros to compete with Chinese brands like BYD.
