Jeep has a plan for making its cars electric. They’re not just making the all-electric Wagoneer S and Recon, but they’re also making 4xe hybrids for all their cars. The CEO of Jeep, Antonio Filosa, said at the Wagoneer S reveal that the next plug-in hybrids would be the Gladiator, along with the Wagoneer and Wagoneer L. He also said that these Wagoneers would use a powertrain similar to the Ramcharger range-extender plug-in hybrid.
They’ve been talking about making a Wagoneer 4xe for a while now, even since they showed a concept version in 2020. Back then, they were thinking of using the plug-in hybrid from the Grand Cherokee. But now, they’re going to use the Ramcharger system, which makes more sense. The Wagoneer and Ram 1500 trucks are built on the same platform, so it’s easier to use the Ramcharger’s electric motors and V6 generator.
The Ramcharger’s powerful engine will work well for the Wagoneer because it’s big and needs to carry heavy things and tow trailers. The Ramcharger is supposed to have 663 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque, and a big battery pack, almost as big as the one in the all-electric Wagoneer S.
Filosa and Bill Peffer, the Senior Vice President and Head of Brand at Jeep, said that the Wagoneer 4xe might not have the exact same specs as the Ramcharger. It might have a little less power or a smaller battery. But having a big SUV that’s also electric is a good idea. Right now, the only other big hybrid SUV is the Toyota Sequoia.
