In a recent development concerning Volkswagen’s ID.4 models, the company has uncovered quality issues associated with the door handles. These problems have been traced back to the supplier, U-Shin Autoparts Mexico.
Consequently, a recall of 35,325 units was initiated in May 2023 due to water infiltration into the printed circuit board assembly within the door handle. Despite the recall efforts, as of May 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation has received 12 complaints from ID.4 owners regarding doors unexpectedly opening while in motion, even after undergoing the necessary recall repairs.
Responding promptly to these concerns, Volkswagen Group of America has instructed retailers to conduct comprehensive inspections of all door handles and replace any found to be faulty, all at no expense to the owners. Furthermore, VW dealers have been directed to implement software updates aimed at enhancing the functionality of the door handles.
It’s yet unclear if the reported events are the result of malfunctioning door handle assembly or service professionals. As part of its continuing examination, ODI will assess how well recalls 23V-213 and 23V-312 addressed the fundamental problems.
The revised ID.4 is positioned as a strong challenger against rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E, and it is still qualified for the full $7,500 federal tax credit for the 2024 model year.
