Volkswagen has everyone buzzing with anticipation for the Golf R hot hatchback, especially after showcasing the refreshed Golf lineup, including the powerful front-wheel-drive GTI. Despite this excitement, the Golf R remains under wraps.
At the Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria, professional racers Hans-Joachim Stuck and Johan Kristoffersson tested the 2025 Golf R, which sported unique camouflage featuring shades of blue and “R” and “50 years of Golf” lettering.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen revealed the Golf GTI Clubsport just before the Nürburgring Nordschleife 24 Hours endurance race on June 1, branding it as their most potent front-wheel-drive Golf. Still, there’s no sign of the Golf R.
The recent social media video featuring the MK8.5 mid-lifecycle updates gave fans a look at near-production prototypes, revealing updated LED headlights, taillights, bumpers, and a new 12.9-inch infotainment system.
Although the Variant version will continue in the UK and Europe, it won’t be available in Australia or North America. It’s uncertain if the new Golf R will outdo the ’20 Years’ and ‘333’ special editions, both boasting 333 PS or 329 horsepower.
More details will be revealed at the official premiere, where we will learn if it can rival other high-performance hatchbacks like the Audi RS 3 Sportback or Mercedes-AMG A 45.
