Geely and Mercedes-Benz’s joint venture, Smart, is about to introduce the Smart #5, a fully electric SUV. Debuting as a concept car at the Beijing Auto Show, the production model’s specifications became public after the company applied for a sales license in China.
Clocking in at a mid-size SUV stature, the #5 stretches 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,705 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm.
This practical design offers comfortable seating for five passengers and boasts five-door access. Buyers can choose from four distinct paint colors and four different powertrain configurations. Wheel size options range from 18 to 21 inches, with the top trim level reaching a curb weight of 2,450 kg.
Packing a punch, the Smart #5 electric SUV offers a range of powertrains with impressive performance. The top-of-the-line option cranks out a staggering 638 horsepower, thanks to a combined 165 kW front motor and a 310 kW rear motor.
All variants boast a top speed of 200 km/h, except for the most powerful, which is 210 km/h. Smart utilizes two battery chemistries: lithium iron phosphate (LFP) for rear-wheel drive models and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) for all-wheel drive.
Additionally, the #5 features an 800-volt architecture with advanced 4C-rated cells, enabling up to 350 kW of rapid charging. This translates to gaining an extra 200 km of range in just 10 minutes for the most potent variant or charging from 10% to 80% in a brisk 15 minutes. Production is expected to kick off later in 2024, with the car initially available in select European markets.
