In a move to democratize adventure, Rivian revealed a new mid-size electric vehicle platform in March.

This platform forms the foundation for the upcoming R2, R3, and R3X models, all designed to be significantly more affordable than the company’s flagship R1 line while maintaining impressive performance, utility, and range.

Starting around $45,000, the R2, a mid-size SUV for five, offers a more accessible alternative to the nearly $76,000 R1S Adventure. Borrowing design cues from its bigger sibling for efficiency, the R2 positions itself as a compelling option.

The even more compact R3 takes on the Tesla Model Y with an even lower price tag. This mid-size platform also spawns the R3X, a performance variant boasting enhanced off-road prowess. Both the R2 and R3 will come with a choice of battery packs, with the top option promising over 300 miles of range and neck-snapping acceleration.

However, ambitious targets can be elusive, as past experiences with companies like Fisker have shown. Unlike Fisker though, Rivian has a proven track record with the R1S and R1T.

Their goal? To emulate Tesla’s success story by transitioning from high-end models to a broader market, making Rivian’s unique blend of performance and capability available to a wider audience.

Though Rivian’s R2 and R3 electric vehicles have garnered positive buzz, the company faces a tough EV market. Their success hinges on a flawless launch by 2025/2026. A strategic move was achieving compatibility with Tesla’s Supercharger network, granting Rivian customers access to a vast charging infrastructure across North America.

However, Rivian’s fate depends heavily on broader EV market trends and the execution of their upgraded R1 models, recently Revealed with enhanced infotainment, safety systems, and a power boost.
