Announced in 2016, the second-generation Tesla Roadster has been a long time coming. Despite a 2020 target release date, the electric sports car has faced repeated postponements.
Elon Musk initially promised production within the next year and a half, but deadlines shifted to 2022, then 2023, and most recently 2024. With 2025 approaching, it remains unclear exactly when the Roadster will hit the market.
While base pricing was initially set at $250,000, Tesla has since removed this information from their website. Those interested can still reserve a Roadster with a $50,000 deposit, with a larger portion due upfront.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has caused a stir with the announcement of the new Roadster, generating buzz not just for its headline-grabbing sub-one-second 0 to 60 mph acceleration, but for hints of a far more outlandish feature.
Musk has alluded to a possible collaboration with SpaceX, hinting at the Roadster’s potential to take flight. While details are under wraps, his social media pronouncements have fueled speculation.
Tweets suggest the “SpaceX package” could include cold air thrusters, enabling brief forays into the sky. However, much like the amphibious claims surrounding the Cybertruck, the Roadster’s flying capabilities remain to be seen.
