In a surprising shift, Volvo is bringing back wagons to the UK market after discontinuing them in favor of SUVs last year.

This U-turn comes despite the UK auto industry registering nearly 2 million new vehicles in 2023, with SUVs dominating the top ten sellers. Notably absent from that list were any traditional station wagons, which include models like the Volvo V60.

However, Volvo cites a recent uptick in interest for estates, prompting them to reintroduce the V60 alongside its larger sibling, the V90.

Both wagons will cater to this changing consumer preference by offering a range of powertrains, including both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, reflecting a wider trend toward electrification. Orders are set to open next month, with the V60 leading the charge in July 2024.

Combining power and efficiency, the Volvo V90 features a mild hybrid option alongside a plug-in hybrid variant.

The mild hybrid utilizes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering a brisk 0-62 mph acceleration in 7.5 seconds.

The plug-in hybrid combines this same gasoline engine with a rear electric motor and a sizeable 18.8 kWh battery, enabling an impressive 54 miles of electric-only driving range.

This lineup expansion follows the introduction of the V60 mild hybrid and paves the way for the introduction of the S60 sedan’s mild hybrid version in 2025.
