In a bid to boost US sales and capitalize on the growing electric vehicle market, Hyundai is set to begin production of the Ioniq 5 on American soil.
This marks a significant shift for the Korean automaker, with the redesigned 2025 Ioniq 5 poised to become the first EV to roll off the assembly line at Hyundai’s brand new Metaplant America facility in Georgia.
This move comes after the Inflation Reduction Act disadvantaged non-US-produced electric cars, impacting sales of Hyundai’s popular Ioniq models. The new plant is expected to be fully operational by October, churning out all trim lines of the upgraded Ioniq 5 except the performance-oriented Ioniq 5 N.
These American-made Ioniq 5s will boast a larger battery pack and faster charging times, making them even more competitive in the thriving US EV market.
A frontrunner in electric vehicle technology, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 stands out for its use of the company’s innovative E-GMP architecture.
This 800-volt system, among the first to be adopted in EVs, translates to speedy charging times and strong performance.
The Ioniq 5’s success is evident in its sales figures, ranking as the sixth best-selling EV in the US last year with over 34,000 units sold. So far in 2024, sales remain positive with nearly 15,000 units finding homes in the first five months.
