Bucking the trend of automakers prioritizing SUVs, Volvo has staged a surprising comeback for their wagon lineup with the reintroduction of the popular V60 and V90 models.

This decision comes just a year after the Swedish car company discontinued the wagons in the UK market due to what they perceived as waning consumer interest. However, a surge in customer demand prompted Volvo to bring back both models, with deliveries expected to begin later in 2024.

The return of the V60 and V90 wagons raises an intriguing question: could this be a turning point for the wagon segment or even a broader signal of renewed interest in sedans that have been eclipsed by the dominance of SUVs in recent years? Only time will tell if other manufacturers follow Volvo’s lead, but the wagons’ return in the UK market is certainly a spark of hope for wagon enthusiasts.

Earlier this year, rumors of a revival for the Volvo V60 and V90 wagons started gaining traction, thanks to an Autocar report. While these well-regarded wagons haven’t seen a significant redesign since their 2016 introduction, Volvo initially opted to sideline them.

This move mirrored the industry’s perception of waning wagon sales as consumer preferences shifted towards the ever-popular crossover and SUV segments. However, a surprising uptick in demand for the V60 and V90 wagons forced Volvo to reconsider their decision.

This unexpected twist of events highlights the enduring appeal of wagons for a certain segment of the market, prompting Volvo to bring these practical and stylish vehicles back into the fold.

This mid-size offering caters to a range of driving preferences with its Plus and Ultra trims. Under the hood, you’ll find a choice of powertrains to suit your needs.

The T6 and T8 options pair a potent 145 horsepower electric motor with a gasoline engine, offering either 253 or 310 horsepower for a thrilling driving experience. But if you prefer a more conventional setup, the V60 also boasts a fuel-efficient 197 horsepower B4 mild-hybrid engine.

Looking for a larger wagon with a focus on eco-friendly performance? The V90 steps up to the plate. Exclusively available as a plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive, the V90 offers the T6 powertrain in Plus trim and the T8 in Ultra trim.

This combination of electric power and a gasoline engine delivers both impressive fuel economy and a powerful driving experience, making the V90 a perfect choice for the environmentally conscious driver who doesn’t compromise on performance.

While Volvo announced starting prices for the V60 and V90 wagons at £43,370 ($55,553) and £62,280 ($79,776) respectively, these versatile vehicles are not readily available to all.

Deliveries are slated for the third quarter, but there’s a catch: Volvo discontinued sales of sedans and wagons in the UK last summer. Customers hoping to configure an S60 or V90 online were out of luck, with only dealer stock remaining.
