Gearing up for better fuel economy, the 2025 Mazda CX-50 introduces a hybrid powertrain for American drivers. This innovative option marks a collaboration between Mazda and Toyota, leveraging Mazda’s proven 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine and Toyota’s extensive experience in hybrid technology.
The result is a system that seamlessly integrates multiple electric motors and a strategically sized battery pack to deliver exceptional efficiency. All-wheel drive is achieved through a rear-mounted electric motor, mirroring the setup found in the RAV4 Hybrid.
Additionally, a continuously variable transmission (eCVT) replaces the traditional automatic gearbox, further optimizing performance and fuel economy. This hybrid addition promises not only impressive efficiency gains but also a potentially more engaging driving experience often associated with Mazda vehicles.
Mazda estimates that the hybrid system saves drivers around $575 annually on fuel compared to the standard gasoline-powered CX-50. While towing capacity remains at 1,500 pounds with the proper Mazda accessories, the CX-50 Hybrid boasts a unique advantage: its battery placement in the rear floor frees up valuable cargo space.
Visually, the CX-50 Hybrid sets itself apart with hybrid-specific design elements, including a redesigned lower front bumper, distinctive wheel options, and the possibility of a luxurious red leather interior.
Even the base-level Preferred trim offers a generous array of features, mirroring many of those found on higher trims of the non-hybrid CX-50.
These include 17-inch black alloy wheels, a user-friendly 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone integration for both Apple and Android devices, a wireless charging pad for your phone, an eight-speaker sound system, four USB-C ports for charging and connecting devices, a convenient power liftgate, Alexa built-in for voice-controlled assistance, and heated front seats for added comfort.
Revealing its 2025 lineup, Mazda has revealed pricing for the CX-50, catering to a range of preferences. Starting at $31,650, the base model features a traditional gasoline engine. Those seeking improved fuel efficiency can opt for the hybrid version, which starts at $33,970, for a difference of $2,320.
It’s important to note that these prices exclude destination fees, which vary slightly by location. For drivers seeking top-of-the-line performance, the CX-50 2.5 Turbo starts at a steeper price point of $48,800 for the Meridian Edition trim. Beyond the powertrain options, all 2025 CX-50 models benefit from several upgrades.
Additionally, the CX-50 2.5 Turbo boasts a range of new tech features, such as a See-Through View function, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Turn-Across Traffic Alert, and Front Crossing Detection.
Scheduled to arrive in dealerships by August 2024, the gasoline-powered CX-50 will be joined by the hybrid variant later in the year, providing a well-rounded selection for consumers.
