Debuting in 2018, the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny offered a thrifty three-cylinder turbo engine for the Japanese kei car version, while global markets received a naturally aspirated four-cylinder option.
This 1.5-liter engine, combined with Jimny’s boxy design and body-on-frame construction, resulted in lower fuel efficiency. To address this in Europe, Suzuki began selling the Jimny as a two-seater commercial vehicle in July 2021.
But even the commercial variant’s time in Europe is coming to an end. To commemorate this farewell, Suzuki launched the Jimny Horizon, a limited edition exclusive to the German market.
Suzuki is giving the Jimny a special edition send-off in Europe with a package that emphasizes its off-road capability. The most noticeable addition is the inclusion of the rugged Adventure side skirts, which were previously optional.
The spare wheel cover also gets a special touch with the Suzuki logo and lettering. Rounding out the visual upgrades are a retro-style front grille with Suzuki lettering and a protective skid plate for the front bumper.
The Japanese automaker has set a course to introduce five fully electric vehicles by 2030, with the initial offering anticipated to arrive this fiscal year. This strategic move has significant ramifications for the popular Jimny model.
While details surrounding the electric Jimny’s release date remain undisclosed, Suzuki is solidifying its partnership with Toyota to leverage their knowledge in battery technology and development for its upcoming fleet of EVs.
This collaboration isn’t a novel concept for Suzuki, as they’ve already integrated re-branded Toyota hybrids into their European lineup to meet current emission standards. The impending 2025 regulations that mandate significantly lower average CO2 emissions for automakers serve as a major catalyst behind Suzuki’s electrification push.
Failure to comply with these stricter emission targets will result in substantial fines, making the transition to EVs a strategic imperative. This development not only ensures a more environmentally friendly future for Suzuki’s vehicles but also potentially paves the way for an electric iteration of the iconic Jimny.
The electrification of this beloved off-roader would mark a significant shift for Suzuki, catering to a growing demand for eco-conscious adventure vehicles.
