China’s electric car market continues to see a surge in popularity, and Volkswagen is diving in headfirst with the introduction of a new sub-brand, ID. Unyx. The ID. Unyx ushers in the brand with an electric SUV coupe that might surprise some with its resemblance to another car.
Underneath the stylish exterior lies a platform and core components shared with the Cupra Tavascan. However, Volkswagen hasn’t simply slapped a new badge on the Tavascan. The ID. Unyx sports a unique design language for the Chinese market.
Distinctive headlights, a thin LED light bar, and a redesigned front bumper set the ID. Unyx apart from its European cousin. The makeover continues in the rear with custom taillights and a subtly modified bumper. Replacing Cupra logos with their insignia throughout, Volkswagen ensures the ID. Unyx establishes a distinct presence on Chinese roads.
Aimed specifically at the Chinese market, the VW ID. Unyx enters the scene boasting two distinct electric powertrains. The base model features a single, rear-mounted electric motor paired with a 77 kWh battery pack. This configuration is expected to achieve a remarkable driving range of up to 386 miles, according to Chinese testing standards.
An all-wheel-drive variant is also in the pipeline, promising performance on par with the European Cupra Tavascan. While details are still forthcoming, the ID. Unyx signifies a crucial chapter in Volkswagen’s electrification strategy for China.
The German automaker has charted an ambitious course, aiming to introduce 34 new vehicles in the region by the end of the decade. This surge will encompass 16 electric vehicles under the ID. Unyx sub-brand, directly addressing the rising demand for eco-friendly transportation. But Volkswagen isn’t solely focusing on EVs.
To cater to a wider range of consumer preferences, they also plan to introduce conventionally powered gasoline vehicles alongside 6 new plug-in hybrid options, solidifying their presence in the ever-evolving Chinese automotive world.
This strategic mix positions Volkswagen to capitalize on the diverse needs of Chinese drivers, offering a spectrum of choices from zero-emission electric vehicles to traditional gasoline models with the added efficiency of hybrid technology.
