Stepping aside in 2026, the current BMW X5 (codenamed G05) makes way for the G65 a fifth-generation luxury SUV spied testing in Spain. This upcoming X5 will embrace electrification alongside traditional gasoline and hybrid powertrains. A high-performance M variant, the G95, is also planned for release later.
While the prototypes remain heavily camouflaged, the look of next-generation design elements emerges. Inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse concepts, these include split taillights stretching into the liftgate and a liftgate-mounted roof spoiler reminiscent of the X3-sized concept.
Unlike the concept’s Ford Mustang Mach-E-style door handles, the G65 retains pop-out handles for all doors. Though the interior remains hidden, the G65 is expected to enter production in late 2026 at the Spartanburg plant for the 2027 model year. Interestingly, it will utilize the CLAR platform from the current X5, even for the electric iX5 variant, instead of the anticipated Neue Klasse architecture.
BMW’s X5, underpinned by the CLAR platform, currently offers the electric xDrive50 model starting at $87,250. Despite its weight, the xDrive50 achieves a commendable 309-mile EPA range, although a dedicated EV architecture could have pushed this further. Tesla’s Model X, priced from $79,990, boasts a slightly higher 326-mile range.
The X5 lineup will expand with the 50 xDrive and M70 xDrive variants, while the V8-powered X5 M remains. The M60i might be replaced by the M60e, likely a plug-in hybrid with a potential inline-six engine.
Europe will exclusively receive the range-topping, 563-horsepower M760e, while the US retains the V8-powered 760i. The X5 M760e will debut BMW’s next-gen EES25 telematics system, also slated for the refreshed 7 Series and the upcoming Neue Klasse models.
