The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a formal investigation into potential safety hazards associated with the 2022 Ram 1500 and Jeep Wagoneer models equipped with the 5.7-liter eTorque V8 engine.

A growing number of complaints, totaling over 80, have been filed by owners reporting alarming incidents of sudden engine stalls, unexpected shifts into the park, and the automatic engagement of the emergency brake while driving at low speeds. These malfunctions pose a serious safety threat to drivers and passengers alike.

To address these concerns, the NHTSA has assembled a team of experts to scrutinize the issue and determine its root cause. If the investigation reveals a safety defect, FCA US LLC could be ordered to recall approximately 150,000 vehicles for necessary repairs. FCA US LLC issued a recall in April 2023 targeting specific 2021 Ram 1500 pickup trucks equipped with a mild-hybrid V8 engine.

The recall, designated 23V-265, attributed the issue to faulty powertrain control module software that could result in an overly rich fuel mixture and subsequent engine stalls. Investigations into similar problems affecting 2022 models uncovered distinct root causes, currently under examination in preliminary evaluation PE24018.

A significant shift occurred with the 2025 Ram 1500, as the venerable 5.7-liter V8 was replaced by a twin-turbocharged inline-six engine. This departure from the traditional V8 configuration stands in contrast to the persistent V8 offerings from rival automakers Ford and General Motors in the highly competitive half-ton pickup truck market.

While the industry leans towards turbocharged and smaller displacement engines for improved fuel efficiency and emissions, the enduring appeal of naturally aspirated V8s, particularly those found in Ford’s Coyote and Predator models and GM’s small-block offerings, continues to resonate with performance-oriented consumers.

The decision by Stellantis to abandon the V8 in the Ram 1500 is a notable strategic move, potentially signaling a broader industry trend towards electrification and alternative powertrains in the coming years.
