The line between car types is blurring. Everyday sedans boast sports car-like performance and even off-road supercars exist. This trend reflects a desire for all-in-one vehicles, even if such versatility isn’t always needed. While cramming every car function into one machine is unrealistic, manufacturers are giving it their best shot.

This is where the Isuzu D-Max comes in. Technically a truck (under 2,040kg for higher speed limits!), offers work-related tax benefits and a 1-tonne load capacity. But what truly interests us is its off-road prowess.

We’re talking challenging terrain, not just casual dirt tracks – the kind of adventure that pushes vehicles to their limits. To test this, we took the D-Max’s top-of-the-line V-Cross variant for a spin. This adventure-ready trim boasts creature comforts designed for everyday enjoyment.

Commanding a high vantage point, the Isuzu D-Max offers excellent visibility thanks to its lofty seating position and expansive windows. Even the strategically placed A-pillars with grab handles barely impede the driver’s view. While canopy options might be tempting for cargo space, they can hinder rearward visibility.

Opting for an open bed might be ideal for those prioritizing a clear sightline. Despite its rugged nature, the D-Max tackles corners with surprising agility. The well-tuned suspension keeps body roll in check, with the high-mounted upper control arms in the front playing a key role.

The leaf springs in the rear, designed for a 1-tonne payload, also contribute to a comfortable ride even with an empty bed. But the D-Max’s capabilities extend far beyond paved roads.
