Summertime and automobiles often present a challenging combination. The relentless sun transforms even the most opulent vehicles into uncomfortable, sweltering spaces. While conventional solutions like shade or garage parking provide some relief, they are not always practical. Imagine a car that could defy the sun’s heat, remaining pleasantly cool regardless of the external temperature.

Nissan, in partnership with Radi-Cool, is exploring a groundbreaking approach: a specialized paint that leverages radiative cooling technology. This innovative coating could revolutionize automotive comfort by effectively dissipating heat as thermal radiation. The key lies in metamaterials, engineered substances with extraordinary properties not found in nature.

By incorporating these materials into the paint, Nissan aims to create a vehicle exterior that reflects the sun’s heat while simultaneously releasing it into the atmosphere, thereby keeping the interior refreshingly cool. Nissan is developing a groundbreaking paint capable of defying the sun’s heat. This innovative coating harnesses the power of microstructure particles engineered to interact with light in unprecedented ways.

One particle reflects near-infrared rays, typically absorbed by traditional paint and converted into heat. The other particle goes a step further, emitting electromagnetic waves that actively repel heat energy away from the vehicle and back into the atmosphere. This dual-action system effectively shields the car from the sun’s scorching rays.

The technology, in development since 2021, underwent a real-world test last November at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. A Nissan NV100, serving All Nippon Airways, was coated with the experimental paint and deployed in the airport’s notoriously sun-baked environment. Initial results, according to Nissan, are highly promising.

Comparative tests involving identical vehicles, one with standard paint and the other with innovative coating, exposed the paint’s remarkable heat-deflection properties. Left in direct sunlight for an extended period, the temperature difference between the two vehicles was substantial, underscoring the potential of this revolutionary technology.

Nissan is poised to redefine automotive comfort and efficiency with its groundbreaking radiative cooling paint. This innovative technology harnesses the power of specialized paint particles to dramatically reduce a vehicle’s exterior temperature by up to 12 degrees Celsius. This significant thermal reduction translates to a noticeably cooler interior, mitigating the need for excessive air conditioning.

While challenges in paint application and thickness remain, Nissan has made substantial progress towards overcoming these hurdles. The potential benefits are far-reaching: from enhancing passenger comfort on sweltering days to improving fuel economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

As research continues, the prospect of a future where vehicles equipped with this revolutionary paint become commonplace is increasingly within reach, promising a more sustainable and pleasant driving experience for all.
