Rey Rivera of Reyn Speed Shop is a passionate enthusiast of the E31 8 Series. Unlike many who prefer to preserve the original condition of their 850i, Rivera started on a bold project to transform his once-stock vehicle into a completely different beast. He accomplished this by replacing the original engine with a modern powerplant from a newer BMW model.
Dubbed the 858 CSL, Rivera’s creation is essentially an E60 BMW M5 beneath the skin. The original 5.0-liter V10 engine was upgraded with a stroker kit, increasing its displacement to 5.8 liters. To complement the powerful engine, Rivera also installed a three-pedal manual transmission. While the manual option was only available in North America for the E60 M5, it remains a popular choice in Europe.
The 858 CSL boasts a carbon-clad exterior, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, functional DSC and ABS, and custom-fabricated LED clusters. The iconic pop-up headlights were replaced with hood vents, and the mirrors were sourced from an 850 CSi. Beyond these modifications, Rivera also implemented several other enhancements to raise the 858 CSL’s performance and aesthetics.
The suspension was upgraded with stiffer springs and dampers to improve handling and reduce body roll. The exhaust system was replaced with a high-flow system to optimize engine performance and enhance the exhaust note. Additionally, the interior received several upgrades, including sports seats, a sports steering wheel, and carbon fiber trim.
These modifications transformed the 858 CSL into a truly exceptional vehicle, combining the classic elegance of the E31 8 Series with the modern performance and technology of the E60 M5. Rivera’s creation is a testament to his passion and skill, and it has undoubtedly earned its place among the most iconic modified BMWs of all time.
