Lexus, often associated with refined luxury and quiet efficiency, has occasionally ventured into high-performance driving. While their current lineup offers sporty models like the IS F Sport Performance, RC F, and LC series, these vehicles, powered by V8 engines, don’t quite reach the pinnacle of Lexus’ performance capabilities.
A few years ago, Lexus introduced a true performance flagship: the LFA grand tourer/supercar. Equipped with a V10 engine, this model was a stark departure from the brand’s usual offerings.
The LFA, a limited-production masterpiece, showcased Lexus’ ability to create a thrilling and exhilarating driving experience. Unfortunately, the LFA is no longer available, leaving a void in the current lineup.
Despite the lack of official confirmation, the rumor mill has been buzzing about a potential new high-performance Lexus model. Back in October 2022, Toyota filed for the trademark “Lexus LFR,” adding fuel to the speculation.
This coincided with the mysterious sighting of a high-performance coupe testing at Fuji Speedway in early August of this year. Many believe this prototype is closely related to the GR GT3 Concept revealed at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon.
While the GR GT3 Concept is expected to become the next iteration of the Lexus RC F GT3 in 2026, the Fuji Speedway prototype seems more geared towards a street-legal application. If the Lexus LFR comes to fruition, it could potentially be a more powerful and aggressive alternative to the current Lexus RC F.
However, it’s unlikely to be a direct successor to the legendary LFA. Instead, a spiritual successor with an all-electric powertrain is more likely. The Lexus LFR, on the other hand, could be powered by a V8 engine, aiming to compete with high-performance models like the Ford Mustang Dark Horse and Dodge Charger Sixpack. It might even offer a more extreme and expensive alternative to the Toyota GR Supra, challenging V8-powered rivals from Ferrari and McLaren.
