The American automotive world has been marked by a series of brands that, like fleeting comets, blazed brightly before fading into obscurity. From the classic names of Pontiac and Oldsmobile to the more recent examples of AMC and Plymouth, the list of defunct automakers is a testament to the industry’s dynamic nature.

Among these fallen giants, Duesenberg stands out as a particularly intriguing case. Renowned for its craftsmanship, innovation, and racing prowess, Duesenberg’s legacy is a testament to the brand’s pioneering spirit and its enduring allure.

Founded in 1920 by the Duesenberg brothers, Fred and August, the Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Company quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the automotive world. The brand’s innovative straight eight engine, four wheel hydraulic brakes, and luxurious design set it apart from its competitors.

On the racetrack, Duesenberg dominated, securing victories in prestigious events such as the French Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500. Despite its early successes, Duesenberg faced significant challenges. The Great Depression, coupled with internal management issues, led to financial difficulties.

The brand eventually ceased production in 1937, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional craftsmanship and engineering. Today, Duesenberg’s classic cars are highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts, serving as a reminder of the brand’s enduring appeal.

Though nearly a century has passed since Duesenberg’s last roar faded from the real world, the marque’s legacy continues to ignite the imaginations of car lovers, even in the boundless digital car design. Marco Federici, a transportation designer and self-proclaimed “car lover” known online as markdragoncooper, has taken it upon himself to breathe new life into the legendary brand.

His vision takes the form of the Duesenberg SS24, a hypothetical concept car that pays subtle tribute to the Duesenberg SSJ, the supercharged variant of the Model J. The SS24 retains the essence of the Duesenberg’s classic lines, translated into a sleek and modern convertible.

However, Federici doesn’t merely replicate the past; he infuses the design with a futuristic edge. Extensive use of LED lighting throughout the vehicle evokes a unique steampunk aesthetic, where classic form meets cutting edge technology.

The interior design follows suit, seamlessly blending retro touches with modern functionality. Even the nostalgic whitewall tires find their place in this digital world.

While some design choices, like the elongated and slender tail, raise questions about practicality, the true intrigue surrounding the SS24 lies under the hood what kind of powerplant would propel this hypothetical Duesenberg revival? Federici leaves us pondering this question, further fueling the mystique of the resurrected Duesenberg.
