When we envision million-dollar classic American cars, our minds often drift toward the iconic muscle cars or the sleek sports cars that dominated the automotive world in their heyday. However, the classic car auctions are far more diverse and intriguing.
Some pre-WWII gems, like the Duesenberg and Stutz Bearcat, have also commanded astronomical prices, demonstrating their enduring appeal and historical significance. These vintage vehicles, once symbols of luxury and speed, have transformed into highly sought after collectibles.
Their timeless designs, coupled with their rich histories, have fascinated enthusiasts and investors alike. The Duesenberg, with its opulent interiors and powerful engines, has long been revered as one of the most prestigious American automobiles of its era.
The Stutz Bearcat, on the other hand, is celebrated for its racy performance and iconic design. The allure of these pre-WWII classics lies not only in their aesthetic appeal but also in their historical significance. They represent a time of great innovation and technological advancement in the automotive industry. As such, they serve as tangible reminders of the American Dream and the spirit of entrepreneurship that characterized the early 20th century.
A rare 1914 Stutz Bearcat, once part of the renowned Kelsey Collection, recently crossed the block at Mecum’s Dallas 2024 auction. This two-owner classic has been meticulously restored to its original specifications and still boasts its original Wisconsin four-cylinder engine. Despite spending decades in storage, the odometer reads a remarkably low 10,226 miles.
The Bearcat, one of the finest examples of its kind, failed to meet its reserve price during the auction, but the “Bid Goes On” feature offers potential buyers a chance to submit additional bids for 21 days. While the outcome remains uncertain, this Stutz has the potential to join the ranks of million dollar Bearcats, as a similar 1914 model sold for a staggering $2.92 million in 2021.
The Dallas 2024 auction also featured a collection of pre-war classics from the Kelsey Collection, including a 1903 Oldsmobile Model R, a 1906 Cadillac Model M, and a 1915 Pierce Arrow Model 38-C. The most valuable vehicle in this collection, a 1933 Auburn 12-165, sold for $990,000.
