The dawn of a new decade brought a bitter pill for muscle car enthusiasts. As the automotive world shifted, the allure of raw power began to fade. Fuel-efficient engines and insurance companies’ aversion to high-performance risks conspired to drive muscle car sales into a nosedive.

The Pontiac GTO, a once-iconic symbol of American muscle, met an untimely demise. Mercury, too, struggled to keep its Cougar afloat. The XR-7, once a prized variant, faced dwindling demand. Despite its premium price tag, the Cougar failed to capture the hearts of many.

Among the rare survivors is this black-on-black-on-black 428 Cobra Jet Cougar convertible. A dealer demonstrator, it boasts every available option, including Ram Air induction. According to the Marti report, this specific configuration is incredibly scarce, with only four examples known to exist.

Despite its obvious condition, this 1967 Cougar still holds significant value due to its rarity. The original engine remains under the hood, though it’s missing essential components like the carburetor and air cleaner. The odometer shows a surprisingly low 65K miles, and the owner claims they’re all original.

Priced at $32,500 on eBay, the car is a steal considering its unique features and the potential for restoration. While it may not have the XR-7’s performance upgrades, the owner’s willingness to accept offers opens the door for negotiation.

Located in Woodbine, Maryland, the Cougar is a project car that requires extensive bodywork and a complete overhaul. The engine is currently non-functional, so a trailer will be necessary for transportation. With only 29 days left on the listing, interested buyers should act quickly and conduct a thorough inspection before making a purchase.
