Renault’s upcoming 4 E-Tech is poised to reimagine the iconic R4 model. This compact crossover, slightly larger than its hatchback bodied sibling, the 5 E-Tech, was recently spied testing in Spain. The camouflaged prototypes offer the look of a twin screen dash layout, reminiscent of the original R4’s distinctive design.
Features like roof mounted rails, circular daytime running lights, and rectangular taillights suggest that the 4 E-Tech will maintain the essence of the beloved classic while incorporating modern elements. The exterior lighting system, in particular, pays homage to the commercially successful R4 that Renault produced from 1961 to 1992.
The R4, which continued production in Slovenia until 1994, achieved immense popularity and garnered the nickname “Katrca” from the French “quatre.” Its R4L variant, known as “Quatrelle” in French, further contributed to its legacy. Together with the discontinued R3, the original Renault 4 surpassed 8.1 million units sold over its 33 year production run.
The 4 E-Tech, with its blend of nostalgia and innovation, is expected to appeal to both fans of the original R4 and those seeking a modern, compact crossover. Renault’s commitment to preserving the R4’s heritage while embracing contemporary design elements is evident in this upcoming model.
While the 4 E-Tech is currently just a concept, it showcases Renault’s potential for expanding its electric vehicle lineup into new segments. The rugged design and off road capabilities of the 4 E-Tech could appeal to customers seeking an adventurous and eco friendly driving experience.
Future versions of the 4 E-Tech may feature a twin-motor setup with more powerful motors, providing even greater performance and range. Additionally, Renault could consider adding features like advanced driver assistance systems, panoramic sunroofs, and premium interior materials to enhance the appeal of the vehicle.
