In the late 1970s, amidst the fuel crisis and tightening regulations, American luxury carmakers were scrambling to maintain their appeal. Cadillac, once synonymous with powerful performance, sought alternative ways to impress potential buyers.

One such experiment was the Eldorado Biarritz power T-top, a feature that was so rare only a handful were ever produced. The power T-top was a novel concept at the time, featuring two electrically actuated panels that slid under one another and together under the center section of the car’s roof.

This innovative design allowed for an open air driving experience without compromising the car’s structural integrity or weatherproofing.

The Eldorado Biarritz power T-top was a bold departure from the traditional luxury car, offering a sense of freedom and excitement that was lacking in other models. However, the high cost of production, coupled with the limited demand for such a specialized feature, ultimately led to its discontinuation.

Despite its short lived production, the Eldorado Biarritz power T-top remains a fascinating example of Cadillac’s innovative spirit during a challenging time in the automotive industry. The Oldsmobile Toronado XSR, a prototype equipped with power T-tops, was produced in limited quantities, with estimates ranging from one to three units.

American Sunroof Corporation, which had previously collaborated with Oldsmobile on the Toronado project, subsequently turned to Cadillac to offer their power T-top system. This led to the introduction of the 1978 Cadillac Eldorado with Power T-Tops, which were initially intended for promotional purposes but eventually made available to the public in a limited run.

While the exact number of Eldorado models with power T-tops remains uncertain, sources suggest that only a handful were produced, with estimates ranging from seven to ten. One such example, owned by Canadian car collector Steve Plunkett, is a 1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Custom Classic painted in Arizona Beige/Demitasse Brown.

This particular vehicle is notable for its rarity and excellent condition, with its power T-tops, 425 cubic inch V8 engine, and original features all functioning properly. The Eldorado Biarritz Custom Classic was a highly sought-after model in its time, with only 1,499 examples produced. The addition of power T-tops further enhanced its exclusivity, making it a truly unique and desirable collectible.
