Toyota has initiated a safety recall for the hybrid version of the Corolla Cross in the United States. The recall affects an estimated 42,199 vehicles produced between June 1, 2022, and September 10, 2024.
The issue stems from a faulty brake actuator assembly supplied by Bosch, which could lead to reduced braking force and increased risk of a crash in certain driving conditions. Toyota dealers will be updating the skid control electronic control unit software at no cost to owners.
The recall is expected to begin in November 2024, with owners receiving notification letters by mail. The Toyota Corolla Cross, a compact SUV, offers a choice between a hybrid and a combustion only powertrain.
The hybrid model starts at $28,220, while the gas powered version begins at $23,860. While the hybrid comes standard with all wheel drive, the gas model is front wheel drive only. Powered by a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated I4 engine, the Corolla Cross delivers 169 horsepower and 151 pound feet of torque.
The hybrid version features three electric motors, including one that drives the rear wheels, providing a combined output of 196 horsepower. This additional electric motor enhances the Corolla Cross’s fuel efficiency and offers a more responsive driving experience.
In the first half of 2024, Toyota sold 45,167 Corolla Cross units in the United States, surpassing the 28,336 sold in the same period last year. The hybrid version accounted for 17,129 sales, while the gas-powered model sold 530 units.
This significant increase in sales demonstrates the growing popularity of the Corolla Cross, especially the hybrid model, which has seen a surge in demand due to its combination of fuel efficiency, performance, and all wheel drive capability.
