The Ford Torino, a lesser known sibling of the Mustang, was produced from 1968 to 1976. While it lacks the iconic status of its more famous counterpart, the Torino spawned a few rare and sought-after muscle cars. One of the most notable is the Torino Talladega, built in 1969 to homologate an aerodynamically improved model for NASCAR competition.
Powered by the mighty 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8, the Talladega saw limited production with only 756 units built. Its race-spec version, equipped with the 429 cubic inch V8, dominated NASCAR tracks, winning 29 Grand National races and the 1969 championship.
Another limited edition Torino is the Twister Special, which shared the badge with the Mustang. Both were produced in late 1969 for the 1970 model year and sold exclusively through Ford’s Kansas City District Sales Office.
The Torino Twister Special, available in only 90 examples, was powered by the 429 cubic inch Cobra Jet V8 and featured unique decals on the rear fenders. Unlike the Mustang Twister Special, the Torino version was offered in only one color: Vermillion.
This pristine example, boasting a flawless restoration and original numbers-matching 429 V8, is a testament to the muscle car era. With its manual transmission and optional bucket seats, it’s one of only 30 units produced in this configuration, making it a highly desirable and valuable collectible.
