Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for certain GLE vehicles produced between 2021 and 2022, affecting an estimated 10,655 units in the United States. The recall is due to a potential wiring harness routing issue that could prevent the front airbags from deploying correctly. The automaker discovered the problem during an internal crash test in October 2021 and initiated a recall campaign in March 2023.
Upon further investigation, Mercedes found that the wiring harness leading to the frontal airbag acceleration sensor was not routed as required in one specific case, leading to incorrect airbag deployment. This incident prompted the automaker to take immediate action to address the issue and ensure the safety of its customers.
To prevent similar occurrences, Mercedes retrained plant employees on the correct wiring harness routing and implemented a thorough rework campaign. However, despite these measures, the automaker could not rule out the possibility of improperly routed harnesses in GLE vehicles produced before March 8, 2022.
As a result, the recall affects GLE 350 and GLE 450 SUVs produced between July 19, 2021, and March 8, 2022. Dealers will be instructed to inspect and, if necessary, reroute the wiring harness to ensure proper airbag function. Owner notification letters will be mailed by November 26, 2024, informing affected customers of the recall and providing instructions on how to schedule a service appointment.
Mercedes-Benz takes safety very seriously and is committed to addressing any issues that may compromise the safety of its vehicles. The automaker is working diligently to ensure that all affected vehicles are repaired promptly and that its customers can drive with confidence.
