Land Rover’s electric vehicle lineup is expanding rapidly. Following the Range Rover EV and Velar EV prototypes, the smaller Range Rover Sport has now been spotted testing at the Nurburgring. This undisguised prototype showcases the design similarities between the electric and ICE versions of the Range Rover Sport.
The production model is expected to launch in 2025. The Range Rover Sport EV stands out with its partially enclosed grille, reminiscent of the Range Rover EV.
The absence of an exhaust system and the yellow EV warning stickers further confirm its electric nature. The “Prototype Vehicle” labels on the front and rear bumpers emphasize its developmental stage.
The Range Rover EV and Range Rover Sport EV share more than just their grilles. Their electrical architecture, including the 800 volt battery pack and electric drive units, is identical. This is because they both use the same Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), which is also used by the combustion models.
The Range Rover Electric doesn’t offer any significant aerodynamic improvements, even though the combustion model has self-presenting door handles. The prototype’s wheels are also standard ICE wheels instead of the usual “aero” wheels found on electric vehicles. Hopefully, the production model next year will feature aero wheels to improve the Range Rover EV’s efficiency.
The EV variants will have a much-improved traction control system, taking advantage of the benefits of electric drives. The Range Rover Sport EV can instantly distribute torque where needed by controlling the electric motors individually. This will allow for precise and responsive handling, even in challenging off-road conditions.
The carmaker claims that the reaction time will decrease from around 100 milliseconds for the ICE models to just one millisecond. This will make the Range Rover Sport EV an even better off-roader than the ICE model, capable of tackling difficult terrain with ease. Additionally, the EV variants will benefit from the instant torque delivery and smooth acceleration that electric motors are known for.
This will provide a thrilling driving experience, especially in sport mode. The Range Rover Sports EV will also have a long range, thanks to its efficient electric powertrain and large battery pack. This will make it a practical choice for daily commuting and long-distance travel.
The Range Rover EV and Range Rover Sport EV are impressive vehicles that offer a combination of luxury, performance, and sustainability. Their advanced technology and innovative features make them a compelling choice for those seeking a premium electric SUV.
