The Jeep Avenger, a compact crossover introduced in 2022, is built on Groupe PSA’s Common Modular Platform, restricting its availability to markets outside the US. While the all-electric Avenger has garnered attention, it’s the recently launched Avenger 4xe that’s making headlines.
Despite the ‘4xe’ badge usually signifying a plug-in hybrid, this model is a mild hybrid powered by a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine sourced from PSA. This engine, known for its reliability issues, has been updated with a timing chain in newer iterations.
However, it’s unclear whether the Avenger 4xe utilizes the chain-driven or belt-driven version. Stellantis Europe has opened order books for the Avenger 4xe in Poland, where it’s produced alongside its platform siblings, the Alfa Romeo Junior and Fiat 600.
The base model starts at a premium price of 144,600 zlote (approximately €33,245 or $35,920), while the limited-edition North Face Edition, restricted to 4,806 units, commands a higher price tag of 168,500 zlote (€38,730 or $41,850). This high price point, especially for a small crossover, raises questions about its market positioning and potential success.
The Jeep Avenger 4xe, a subcompact crossover, offers a unique blend of off-road capability and urban style. While the standard model is already visually appealing, the North Face Edition takes it a step further with its vibrant exterior and interior accents. However, it’s surprising that Jeep has made crucial off-road features like all-terrain tires and a sun glare-reducing hood sticker optional.
Available in both left-hand and right-hand drive configurations, the Avenger 4xe shares a platform with the Alfa Romeo Tonale. Its powertrain combines a 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with two electric motors, one powering the front wheels and the other the rear. This setup delivers a total system output of 180 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The Avenger 4xe can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 9.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 120 mph. Despite its compact size, the Avenger 4xe boasts impressive off-road credentials.
It features a generous ground clearance of 8.3 inches, along with impressive approach, departure, and breakover angles. The rear-axle electric motor, combined with a 22.7:1 reduction gear, provides substantial torque for tackling challenging terrain, such as steep slopes and loose surfaces.
