Toyota presented the Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race concept at the SEMA show, an off-road truck that captures the spirit of the brand’s celebrated Baja racing history. Designed as a two-door model, the ProRunner draws inspiration from Toyota’s legendary trophy trucks of the 1990s, particularly those driven by the iconic Ivan “Ironman” Stewart. This concept offers fans a fresh perspective on what a race-ready Tacoma could look like, emphasizing a robust design tailored for off-road enthusiasts.

In addition to its striking design, the ProRunner concept celebrates Toyota’s current partnerships in motorsport, including collaboration with Legacy Motor Club and NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson. The truck features Johnson’s racing number, 84, engraved on the sail panels, honoring his impact on the sport. The color scheme of the ProRunner pays homage to TRD’s racing heritage, featuring vibrant yellow, orange, and red tones complemented by a modern matte black finish. Furthermore, the body is adorned with a new color called Mudbath, which is exclusive to the 2025 TRD Pro, adding to its distinctive appearance.

For performance, the ProRunner incorporates essential features from the Tacoma TRD Pro, ensuring it can handle challenging off-road conditions. Equipped with 2.5-inch Fox QS3 internal-bypass dampers with remote reservoirs, the truck offers enhanced suspension capabilities for rugged terrain. Additionally, TRD upper control arms and multiple skid plates provide the necessary protection, while a roll cage and IsoDynamic seats with multipoint harnesses improve safety and comfort, demonstrating that this concept is built for serious off-road adventures.

Practical design elements further enhance the ProRunner’s functionality. The truck bed includes a mounted spare tire carrier and a fuel cell, along with a cargo net that replaces the traditional tailgate, helping to optimize weight distribution. Classic chrome mirror caps and door handles add a retro touch, while custom aluminum wheels fitted with BFGoodrich tires featuring red, white, and blue lettering create a visually striking combination that merges traditional and contemporary design elements.

The Toyota ProRunner Race concept represents a compelling mix of historical inspiration and modern performance capabilities, showcasing the brand’s commitment to producing adventure-ready trucks. This unique vehicle not only honors Toyota’s rich off-road legacy but also points toward exciting possibilities for future Tacoma models, highlighting the brand’s dedication to innovation and excellence in motorsports.
