The 2025 Rivian R1T is a trailblazing electric truck, that brings together luxury, high performance, and off-road capability. Already known for its versatility, it claimed MotorTrend’s 2022 Truck of the Year award and completed the first electric vehicle crossing of the Trans-America Trail. In this new model year, Rivian has focused on internal upgrades, including a new electrical platform, driver assistance improvements, and expanded motor configurations, with the tri-motor and quad-motor models released in late summer 2024 and late 2024, respectively. Rivian aims to set a new standard in the EV pickup market against competitors like the Tesla Cybertruck and Ford F-150 Lightning.
One of the R1T’s most significant updates is its new motor lineup, offering dual–, tri-, and quad-motor options. The standard dual-motor version produces 553 hp and 610 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0–60 mph in about 4.5 seconds, while the Performance Dual-Motor boosts output to 665 hp and 829 lb-ft of torque, reducing the 0–60 mph time to 3.4 seconds. The tri-motor and quad-motor models provide even more power, with the quad-motor setup capable of 1,025 hp, achieving a 0–60 mph time of just 2.9 seconds. These configurations position the R1T among the fastest electric trucks available.
Battery and range improvements are also noteworthy in the 2025 R1T. It offers three battery pack options, with EPA estimates ranging from 258 to 420 miles, depending on the pack. The new Max battery pack, available on higher-tier models, has an EPA-rated range of up to 420 miles. Charging has been optimized as well; the R1T can charge from 0–80% in about 20 minutes on a Level 3 DC fast charger and takes around 9.5–15 hours to charge on a standard 240V outlet. These charging and range capabilities make it suitable for long trips and daily commutes alike.
Performance is a highlight in the R1T, which handles a wide range of driving environments with ease. The truck’s off-road capabilities include an adjustable air suspension system and hydraulic roll control, making it adept on rugged terrain. On paved roads, its handling and acceleration are impressive, particularly for a vehicle of its size and weight. The R1T’s combined MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) ranges from 79 to 87, helping it to deliver strong efficiency for an EV truck. Its design and premium materials give the cabin a luxurious feel, although some users may find the reliance on touchscreen controls less convenient for everyday functions.
The R1T also comes equipped with a sophisticated infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 15.6-inch center touchscreen, and a 6.8-inch screen in the rear for back-seat climate controls. Standard features include navigation, Bluetooth, a voice assistant, and six USB-C charging ports. The infotainment system supports over-the-air updates and is built using Unreal Engine graphics, delivering smooth and interactive visuals. The R1T also includes unique convenience features like a Dynamic Glass Roof that tints at the press of a button and a removable Bluetooth speaker in the center console.
In terms of safety and driver assistance, the 2025 R1T introduces Rivian’s new Autonomy Platform, which includes enhanced adaptive cruise control, lane centering, a blind spot camera, and Highway Assist hands-free driving. The R1T’s innovative adaptive headlights, using Adaptive Drive Beam technology, will reduce glare for oncoming drivers. With these improvements, Rivian aims to enhance the R1T’s driving experience both on highways and city streets, though some advanced features may roll out later in 2024 through over-the-air updates.
Despite being a compact pickup, the R1T provides versatile cargo solutions with its 54.2-inch bed, a 9.9-cubic-foot front trunk, and the unique Gear Tunnel that offers an additional 11.7 cubic feet of storage. With a maximum payload of 1,760 pounds and a towing capacity of up to 11,000 pounds, the R1T meets many of the functional needs of traditional truck owners, though range may be impacted during heavy towing. Rivian has also incorporated a built-in scale that automatically adjusts range estimates based on load weight, making the truck adaptable for various tasks.
Available in two trims, Adventure and Ascend, the 2025 R1T starts at just under $72,000 for the dual-motor Adventure model with the Standard battery pack, with prices reaching close to $102,000 for the tri-motor Ascend equipped with the Max battery. Quad-motor pricing hasn’t been released yet. With its high-tech features, impressive performance, and versatile design, the R1T stands out in the growing EV truck segment, challenging rivals like the Tesla Cybertruck with a blend of rugged capability and refined luxury.
