Subaru is set to showcase a new electric sports car concept, the Sport Mobility Concept, at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show. The concept car will feature design elements inspired by the Subaru SVX, a model from the 1990s. A teaser photo released by the company highlights styling cues such as a similar side window shape, a wide C-pillar, and slim horizontal headlights extending into the grille. Additionally, the car includes square-shaped wheel arches, a feature that was only present on the rear wheel arches of the original SVX.
The Sport Mobility Concept is meant to represent the evolution of Subaru’s sports car values, though the company has yet to provide further details about its performance or specifications. The SVX, sold from 1991 to 1997, was Subaru’s first major attempt to enter the luxury performance segment, but it was not commercially successful. Despite its innovative design, the SVX failed to excite the market, with only around 25,000 units sold before the model was discontinued.
While there have been rumors about a modern version of the SVX for years, Subaru has not confirmed any plans for a direct revival. However, the company has acknowledged its interest in electric powertrains for future performance models. This aligns with Subaru’s previous efforts, such as the STI E-RA sports car concept, which featured four electric motors generating 1,072 horsepower. The STI E-RA served as a test platform for advanced electric vehicle technology, including precise torque vectoring, and it’s likely some of these technologies will be applied to the upcoming electric sports car concepts.
In addition to the sports car concept, Subaru will also present a new version of its Levorg compact wagon at the Tokyo Auto Show. The Levorg Layback is a high-riding variant of the model, offering a more rugged and versatile option for customers. This new version reflects Subaru’s focus on providing practical and functional vehicles alongside its performance models, catering to a variety of customer needs.
While Subaru has remained silent on specific details regarding the Sport Mobility Concept, its appearance at the Tokyo Auto Show represents a significant moment for the brand. The concept suggests that Subaru is exploring new directions for its sports car lineup, with an emphasis on electric powertrains and modern technology. Fans of the brand and automotive enthusiasts will be eager to see how Subaru combines its heritage of sporty design with the future of electric vehicle performance.
