Jaguar is initiating a significant reinvention with plans to enter the ultra-luxury electric vehicle market, starting with a new four-door Grand Tourer. Recently, the company released images of a camouflaged prototype being tested on U.K. roads, revealing a full-size electric sedan with a long hood and steeply raked windshield. While many details remain undisclosed, this vehicle is expected to represent Jaguar’s move towards a more premium electric offering, aiming to compete with high-end brands.
There is speculation that the new sedan may be called the “I-type,” continuing the naming convention of Jaguar’s first electric model, the I-Pace SUV. The I-Pace, which was discontinued in 2024, garnered attention but fell behind newer electric competitors due to its 240-mile range. The I-type sedan is expected to offer a range of at least 300 miles per charge, with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup likely. Although Jaguar has not confirmed powertrain specifics, the new model will ride on a fresh electric architecture.
While pricing has yet to be revealed, Jaguar’s goal of moving into the luxury market suggests the I-type could be priced in the six-figure range. This shift from selling luxury SUVs in the $70,000 bracket to offering a premium electric sedan in the $200,000 range places the vehicle in direct competition with high-end models like the Cadillac Celestiq, Mercedes-Maybach EQS680 SUV, and Rolls-Royce Spectre. To compete in this space, the sedan will need to feature top-quality interiors, cutting-edge technology, and excellent performance.
In addition to luxury features, the I-type will also need to stand out with strong curb appeal. Jaguar is expected to give a preview of its new design direction through a concept vehicle, which will be revealed during Miami Art Week in December 2024. This event will provide a first look at how Jaguar plans to distinguish itself in the electric vehicle market and shape its future offerings.
Jaguar’s move into the high-end electric sedan market marks a bold shift for the brand, as it seeks to position itself alongside some of the most prestigious names in luxury. While the details are still emerging, the introduction of the I-type will be a pivotal step in Jaguar’s transformation, as it strives to establish itself as a key player in the growing electric vehicle segment.
