The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N addresses the common critique that electric vehicles (EVs) are “boring” by offering features that mimic the tactile and auditory sensations of internal combustion engines (ICE). By integrating “N e-shift” and “N Active Sound Plus,” Hyundai has created an electric SUV that delivers excitement and fun, appealing to traditional automotive enthusiasts.

This new model builds on the original Ioniq 5, launched in 2021, which was celebrated for its futuristic design, fast-charging capability, and unique versatility. Hyundai’s N division, known for its performance-focused innovations, has transformed the Ioniq 5 into a high-powered machine capable of satisfying both everyday drivers and track enthusiasts.

The Ioniq 5 N is powered by a fourth-generation 84kWh battery, delivering up to 641 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque—nearly three times the power of the standard model. To accommodate this dramatic increase, Hyundai made significant modifications to the chassis, cooling system, and motors, ensuring the vehicle could handle high power and torque reliably in demanding scenarios.

With these power upgrades, Hyundai reinforced the suspension, steering, and braking systems to support the increased performance. High-performance brakes and cooling vents were added to withstand intense use, while features such as drift modes, launch control, and battery conditioning systems were introduced for a dynamic driving experience. Fast-charging capabilities allow the vehicle to recharge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, addressing the demands of performance driving.

The focus on performance does come at a cost, as the Ioniq 5 N offers 221 miles of EPA-rated range, compared to the standard model’s 303 miles. This reduction reflects the car’s priority on power and handling, appealing to drivers who value performance and excitement over extended range.

One of the Ioniq 5 N’s standout features is its simulated engine sounds and gear shifts, designed to evoke the nostalgic sensations of ICE vehicles. The N e-shift system replicates gear changes through paddles on the steering wheel, complete with head-bob effects and turbo-like noises, while N Active Sound Plus offers three distinct sound profiles—Ignition, Supersonic, and Evolution—that enhance the sensory experience.

Hyundai’s approach to combining cutting-edge EV technology with nostalgic driving elements was a calculated risk that has resonated well with enthusiasts. These features create a strong connection to the vehicle, making driving an enjoyable and engaging activity rather than just a means of transportation.

The Ioniq 5 N successfully bridges the divide between traditional car lovers and the EV revolution. With its combination of high performance, engaging features, and emotional appeal, it challenges preconceived notions about EVs and proves they can provide an exciting and rewarding driving experience.
