However, the introduction of these advancements inevitably raises a critical question: Are the added costs justified?
Here are five state-of-the-art vehicles hitting the market this year, paired with insights from industry experts.
1. Volkswagen ID Buzz Microbus
MSRP: Starting at $40,000 to $60,000
The iconic Volkswagen bus is making a long-awaited return to the U.S., this time as a fully electric model.
While all the specifics have yet to be unveiled, the ID Buzz is expected to deliver a range of approximately 260 miles. According to Volkswagen, its battery can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes.
Inside, the vehicle is equipped with exciting tech features, including a 10-inch digital gauge cluster, customizable ambient lighting, and massaging front seats—a standout perk.
“The Volkswagen ID Buzz is a fun and practical electric vehicle. It’s roomy [and] stylish and has a long range, making it a great choice for families and road trips,” said Peter Ramsay, editor-in-chief of EVinFocus.
“It’s not as affordable as some other EVs, but it’s still a good value for the price.”
2. Ford Mustang Mach-E
MSRP: Starting at $42,995
Ford’s Mustang Mach-E is a crossover EV that merges the characteristics of an SUV and a sports car.
It comes loaded with advanced features, such as BlueCruise, a hands-free driving system that uses a camera to ensure the driver remains attentive to the road.
The Mach-E also integrates FordPass, an app that acts as a digital car key and allows for remote start and charge monitoring.
Performance enthusiasts will appreciate the Mach-E’s Performance Edition, which can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds.
Additionally, drivers can choose between three driving modes—Engage, Whisper, and Unbridle. Each mode alters the car’s handling, acceleration, sound profile, and even its interior lighting.
“The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a great all-around electric SUV,” said Ramsay. “It’s stylish, fun to drive and has a long range. It’s a good choice for both city dwellers and suburbanites.”
3. Audi Q4 e-tron
MSRP: Starting at $49,800
The Audi Q4 e-tron is an all-electric SUV that combines high-end performance with the luxury Audi is known for.
Offering up to 335 horsepower and a range of approximately 260 miles, it delivers a balance of power and practicality.
The interior is packed with advanced technology, including a touch-sensitive steering wheel, wireless charging, and Audi’s “Virtual Cockpit” digital gauge display.
For an additional cost, buyers can upgrade to a head-up display with augmented reality features.
Despite its impressive specs, the Q4 e-tron’s status as a relatively new model raises some concerns among experts. Jacob Carter, founder of EngineRevUp, expressed a cautious perspective.
“The extended range and performance seems impressive on paper,” he said. “But, in my experience, it takes a few years to work out the kinks with new EV platforms. I’d let others take the plunge first before jumping into something unproven.”
4. Hyundai Ioniq 5N
MSRP: Starting at $70,000
From Hyundai’s N performance division, the Ioniq 5N is an all-electric SUV that offers exceptional power at an attractive price. With up to 641 horsepower, it is built for enthusiasts seeking thrilling performance.
The Ioniq 5N is loaded with cutting-edge features designed to maximize its driving dynamics. For example, the N Grin Boost provides an instant surge of performance at the press of a button.
Additionally, the vehicle includes an e-shift function, which simulates gear shifting and incorporates sound effects inspired by fighter jets to enhance the driving experience.
“Hyundai’s engineers aimed to deliver an unruly driving experience, blending thunderous electric performance with clever software trickery to replicate the essence of an internal combustion vehicle,” said Matas Buzelis.
This is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N – likely the first true electric performance car that isn’t part of the ultra-exclusive, ultra-expensive exotic category. Yes, there have been other EVs boasting massive power upgrades and acceleration that might leave you feeling dizzy after a few launches, but the Ioniq 5 N feels much more purposeful and serious.
Why is that? Well, Hyundai has equipped the Ioniq 5 N with impressive power – 650 horsepower at its peak, to be exact – but they’ve also reworked much of the car’s mechanical setup.
It features completely redesigned suspension, larger and more capable brakes, sporty styling tweaks that help keep the battery cool, and even a new steering system.
That’s not even touching on the addition of synthetic sounds and gear-shifting effects, which add a unique and intriguing touch to the driving experience. It’s akin to taking your shy friend and turning them into a UFC champion – an impressive transformation.
The Ioniq 5 N doesn’t have much competition in its niche, though you could look at alternatives like the Kia EV6 GT and the Ford Mustang Mach-e GT, or step into the more premium space with the Porsche Taycan and Audi RS e-tron GT.
What truly sets the Ioniq 5 N apart from the other fast electric vehicles is its personality. Hyundai has clearly infused this car with character and a sense of fun.
You can make the car sound like a petrol-powered performance vehicle, or even like a fighter jet, and it comes with simulated gearshifts for an added layer of engagement.
While these features might sound like gimmicks at first, they contribute to an electric driving experience that is genuinely entertaining and immersive. The Ioniq 5 N won’t be for everyone, but if you approach it with an open mind, you’ll find it offers a surprisingly enjoyable and unique driving experience.
5. Lucid Gravity SUV
MSRP: Starting around $80,000
Lucid, a newer name in the automotive industry, has quickly gained attention for its advanced EV technology.
The upcoming Lucid Gravity SUV showcases the brand’s innovation, featuring a smaller, lighter, and more sustainable battery pack capable of delivering a remarkable 440-mile range.
What truly sets the Gravity apart is its groundbreaking 900-volt electric architecture, an industry first. This design enhances thermal efficiency, which improves range and significantly reduces charging times.
“The Lucid Gravity boasts an industry-first 900-volt electric architecture, setting it apart with higher thermal efficiency that translates into an improved range and significantly faster charging capabilities,” Buzelis said.
“In a market where most advanced electric vehicles currently utilize a 400-volt architecture, Lucid’s innovation marks a noteworthy advancement.”
