Car theft has become a significant and growing problem in the United States, with the rate of reported car thefts rising in recent years. The economic factors and a social media trend, such as the “Kia Boyz” craze, have contributed to this increase. Certain car models are more frequently targeted due to factors like popularity, ease of theft, or the demand for parts. Understanding which cars are most commonly stolen can help both individuals and car dealerships take preventive measures.

Motor vehicle theft in the U.S. has reached concerning levels, with over 1 million cars stolen in 2023, marking a 1% increase from the previous year. This equates to approximately 3 thefts per 1,000 residents, or a theft every 32 seconds on average. Since 2019, the rate of car theft has been steadily rising. Major states like California, Texas, and Florida report the highest volume of car thefts, while adjusting for population, areas like the District of Columbia and Colorado have the highest theft rates.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) releases an annual “Hot Wheels” report, which identifies the most stolen cars in the U.S. for the year. In 2023, popular models like the Chevrolet Pickup, Ford Pickup, and Honda Civic dominated the list. These cars are often targeted because of their high availability, popularity, and resale value. Understanding why these models are frequently stolen helps in developing preventative strategies for car owners.

1. Chevrolet Pickup

The Chevrolet Pickup, specifically the Silverado, has been a top target for car thieves due to its popularity and value. It is one of the most commonly owned vehicles in the U.S., accounting for 1.55% of all cars on the road. Its high resale value and use for transporting valuable goods make it an attractive target. The model’s popularity ensures that thieves can easily find buyers for stolen vehicles or their parts.

2. Ford Pickup

Similar to Chevrolet’s pickups, Ford’s full-size pickups, especially the F-150 and F-250, are prime targets for theft. Ford pickups are the second most popular vehicles in the U.S. Their high value, frequent use in towing and transporting goods, and popularity make them desirable to thieves. In 2022, a major theft involving Ford F-150s amounted to approximately $1 million in stolen vehicles from a factory lot.

3. Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is another top stolen vehicle, primarily due to its high numbers on the road and long history of production. Older model years of the Civic often lack modern security features, making them easy targets for thieves. Moreover, many parts of the Honda Civic can be easily resold, contributing to its status as a frequently stolen car. In 2023, over 27,000 Honda Civics were stolen, with the 2000 model year being the most targeted.

4. Honda Accord

The Honda Accord, like the Civic, is one of the most popular cars in the U.S., which makes it a frequent target for theft. Parts from both the Civic and Accord are highly interchangeable, making them easy to resell. The Accord has been among the most stolen cars for over a decade, with 2023 thefts primarily targeting the 1997 model. As one of the most common cars on the road, it continues to be a prime target for thieves.

5. Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata’s recent increase in thefts is partly attributed to the “Kia Boyz” social media trend, which highlighted a security vulnerability in certain Hyundai and Kia models. Thieves, particularly teenagers, have exploited this vulnerability, leading to a surge in thefts. Despite efforts to fix the issue, the Sonata remains a frequent target. The 2013 model year has been particularly affected, with over 21,000 thefts in 2023.

6. Hyundai Elantra

Like the Sonata, the Hyundai Elantra is also targeted by the “Kia Boyz” theft trend. The car’s older models are easy to steal due to a lack of advanced security features, making it an attractive option for thieves. Despite Hyundai and Kia’s attempts to address the problem, the trend continues to affect the Elantra, especially the 2017 model. In 2023, nearly 20,000 Hyundai Elantras were reported stolen.

7. Kia Optima

The Kia Optima joins the list of most stolen cars due to the same vulnerability that affects other Kia and Hyundai models. Even after security software upgrades were implemented, some older Optima models remain at risk of theft. The 2015 model year was particularly targeted in 2023, with over 18,000 thefts reported. While newer models are less vulnerable, the older Optima remains a prime target for thieves.

8. Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry has seen a slight drop in theft rates compared to previous years, but it still remains one of the most stolen cars in the U.S. Its affordability, popularity, and long-lasting reputation make it an attractive target for thieves. Older Camrys have fewer security features, making them easier to steal. The 2021 model was the most stolen recently, with over 17,000 thefts in 2023.

9. GMC Pickup

The GMC Pickup, particularly the Sierra, shares many similarities with Chevrolet’s Silverado, making it another target for car thieves. These trucks, built by the same parent company, share many components, including anti-theft features. As a result, both GMC and Chevrolet pickups are frequently stolen, with over 16,000 GMC pickups stolen in 2023. The 2005 model year saw the highest theft numbers for GMC.

10. Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V, a small SUV, has consistently been a top target for car thieves. Its popularity among families and residents of snowy areas makes it highly desirable. Like other popular Honda models, the CR-V has a large market for resold parts, making it attractive to thieves. The 2001 model year was the most stolen in 2023, with over 13,000 CR-Vs reported stolen.

Car theft in the U.S. is a growing problem, and certain vehicles are targeted more often than others. Popular cars like the Chevrolet Pickup, Honda Civic, and Hyundai Sonata are frequently stolen due to their high availability, resale value, and lack of advanced security features. Understanding which vehicles are most at risk can help owners take necessary precautions to protect their cars. Prevention strategies, including better security and awareness, are crucial to curbing this alarming trend.
