Excitement is building around the potential revival of the DeLorean DMC-12, the iconic stainless steel sports car made famous by the “Back to the Future” franchise.
After a 33-year hiatus, the DeLorean Motor Company may resume production, thanks to a 2015 change in federal highway safety regulations.
A New Chapter for DeLorean
The DeLorean Motor Company’s website recently announced plans to manufacture replica 1982 DeLoreans, utilizing a combination of unused original parts and reproduction components.
This development marks a serious change for the modern-day DeLorean Motor Company, which has been refurbishing and selling used DeLoreans since the original manufacturer’s demise in 1982.
The newly produced DeLoreans will retain their classic appearance, with the exception of a modern engine sourced from a yet-to-be-determined supplier.

Production and Pricing Details
DeLorean CEO Stephen Wynne anticipates producing approximately 300 new cars, with a price tag nearing $100,000. This places the vehicle out of reach for many enthusiasts, making it a luxury item akin to time travel.
Mixed Reactions from Owners and Enthusiasts
Among existing DeLorean owners, opinions are divided regarding the reproduction cars. Toby Peterson, owner of the DeLorean Motor Company Northwest franchise, notes that some owners believe the reproductions will increase the value of original DMC-12s, while others are skeptical.
Peterson draws an analogy to art, stating that even a well-crafted replica cannot replace the value of an original.

John DeLorean’s Legacy
The DeLorean’s creator, John DeLorean, passed away in 2005 at the age of 80. Despite his legacy being marred by fraud and drug trafficking charges, DeLorean is credited with conceptualizing the Pontiac GTO.
His company’s struggles and the scandal surrounding him finally led to its demise, despite the DeLorean DMC-12’s later immortalization in “Back to the Future.”
