A top honor has been awarded to Renault’s latest model, earning the prestigious Car of the Year title for 2025. Judges praised its smooth driving experience and affordability, with its £22,995 price tag standing out as a key factor.
Advanced features and an infotainment system comparable to higher-end vehicles further contributed to its recognition.
The original Renault 5 left a lasting impact on the hatchback market during the 1970s, and this modern version has the potential to do the same in the EV sector.
After undergoing extensive testing, the Renault 5 was officially crowned at a high-profile awards ceremony held at Grosvenor House in London. At this prestigious industry event, it also claimed the title of Small Electric Car of the Year.
Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car?, highlighted Renault’s commitment to excellence, stating, “Renault has clearly put everything into this model, producing a car that’s comfortable, enjoyable to drive, competitively priced, and equipped with an infotainment system that surpasses those found in far more expensive models.”

Equipped with a 121bhp electric motor, the Renault 5 reaches a top speed of 93mph and accelerates from 0-52mph in nine seconds.
While speed is not its primary focus, Renault has positioned the model as a practical solution for urban commuting, emphasizing everyday usability in its marketing efforts.
Design Features and Heritage
One distinctive design element includes an optional wicker basket attached to the center console, providing space for carrying a baguette—an unmistakable nod to French culture.
Renault’s Managing Director, Adam Wood, expressed his excitement over the award win, acknowledging the overwhelmingly positive response to the car’s design. He stated, “Winning the Car of the Year award is an incredible achievement, made even more special because this is a highly accessible electric vehicle.
