A recent survey has revealed that almost half of Americans have fantasized about owning a classic car. In a surprising twist, the youngest drivers are the biggest enthusiasts of classic vehicles.

Sixty percent of Generation Z drivers (those born between 1997 and 2012) expressed a desire to own a classic car, nearly doubling the 31% of baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) who shared this interest.

Hagerty worked with OnePoll to “survey more than 2,000 Americans about the role that cars play in their life, their behaviors tied to cars and driving, and more.”

The results show that Generation Z, while generally slower to learn to drive and more inclined to explore alternative transportation methods, is still deeply immersed in car culture.

“77% of Gen Z respondents said they either loved or liked driving, indicating a promising future not only for the auto industry, but also for the collector car community”.

Additionally, the survey found that 32% of Generation Z and 30% of millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) reported having “either owned, or currently own a classic enthusiast vehicle.” In some states, cars can be registered as historic after as little as 20 years.

“The next generation of car enthusiasts is here. The data is clear that Gen Z isn’t just playing car video games, watching YouTube, or creating social media content; they’re also finding ways to participate in the collector car community.”
