The number of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) sold in the UK in 2024 increased by 3% compared to the previous year.

However, data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals that registrations of new electric vans remained stagnant, making up just 6.3% of total registrations identical to the figure recorded in 2023.

The most significant growth was seen in the small van segment, with 8,606 models sold in 2024 compared to 5,955 in 2023, driven largely by the introduction of several new models.

Demand also rose for both medium and large vans, with large vans maintaining their strong appeal among buyers and accounting for 66.3% of the market.

Meanwhile, sales of pick-up trucks declined by 8.3% compared to the previous year.

This trend is expected to continue into 2025 as new government regulations set to take effect in April will reclassify double-cab pick-ups as cars for capital allowances and benefit-in-kind (BIK) taxation purposes.

Despite the introduction of more electric models, their market share did not increase, with diesel-powered vans remaining the preferred choice, comprising over 90% of new LCV registrations in 2024.

So, which vans proved the most popular with buyers last year? Here’s a look at the top 10 best-selling models in the UK.

1. Ford Transit Custom

Strengths

  • Easy to drive
  • Flexible diesel engine and smooth PHEV option
  • Ample interior storage

Weaknesses

  • Slightly reduced load space compared to the previous model
  • No physical climate controls
  • Squared-off steering wheel requires adjustment

The Ford Transit Custom remains a standout choice, earning the title of 2025 Medium Van of the Year. It excels in versatility, offering diesel, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric variants.

In addition to being practical and enjoyable to drive, it also boasts superior refinement compared to many rivals.

Its load space is one of its key strengths, with a maximum payload capacity of up to 1,459kg, outperforming most competitors in its category.

Many models also feature a second sliding door to enhance accessibility.

Even the base-level Transit Custom comes well-equipped, featuring lane-keeping assistance, traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree rear-view camera as standard.

Since its launch in 1965, the Ford Transit has been a fixture on British roads. Today, the Transit name extends across multiple models, including the Transit Custom, Transit Connect, Transit Courier, and two all-electric versions. However, the original Transit remains a strong competitor in its own right.

The Ford Ranger has earned widespread acclaim, and for good reason it’s the most well-rounded pick-up truck we’ve ever tested. It currently holds the title of Best Pick-up Truck in our 2025 Van and Commercial Vehicle Awards.

The Ranger successfully blends comfort and practicality, making it a compelling choice in the pick-up segment.

Its elevated driving position and excellent visibility enhance the driving experience, while its surprising agility sets it apart.

Now in its third generation, it faces increased competition from rival large vans, but it still stands out especially when it comes to technology and interior usability.

A key highlight is its advanced connectivity features, making it one of the most high-tech vans available today. Our top engine pick is the 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel, which offers strong performance and efficiency.

With a variant for nearly every type of buyer, the Volkswagen Transporter remains a top choice, particularly among small businesses and private owners.

Its strong resale value and reasonable running costs add to its appeal, making it a practical long-term investment.

Our preferred engine choice is the 2.0 TDI 150 diesel, delivering 148bhp with a solid balance of performance and efficiency. For those craving extra power, Volkswagen offers a sporty model inspired by the Golf GTI, producing a robust 201bhp.

Its popularity stems from its outstanding payload capacity, which remains excellent even on entry-level trims.

The Partner also offers a hatchback-like driving experience, with responsive steering and minimal body roll, making it one of the easiest small vans to drive.
