With a budget of only a few thousand dollars, your choices may be limited, but it’s still possible to find a reliable car that will take you where you need to go.
While it may be easier to find a dependable used car for around $10,000, there are still options available if your budget is $5,000 or less.
Reliability doesn’t always come with a hefty price tag; however, it often means the car may have higher mileage or be from an older model year.
It’s absolutely possible to find a trustworthy vehicle for under $5,000, and while all the options we’ve listed are available at dealerships, you might find even better deals if you’re willing to negotiate with private sellers.

Our list of the most reliable used cars, all priced at $5,000 or less, is based on dependability data, insights from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). 1. 2008 Honda Fit
Although it’s compact, the Honda Fit is known for its practicality and enjoyable driving experience. As a subcompact hatchback, it offers excellent fuel efficiency, with a combined 29 to 31 MPG and up to 34 MPG on the highway.
Fuel savings are one of its strong points, and you can find 2008 Honda Fits listed on various dealerships for under $5,000.
On the other hand, the 2008 model has fewer complaints and fewer recalls—eight recalls compared to the 12 recalls on the 2010 model. At under $5,000, a well-maintained 2007 Fit may still be a good find if it has a solid history.
2. 2008 Honda CR-V
2008 Honda CR-V was praised by owners for its quality and reliability, ranking higher than competitors from the same year and class, including the Subaru Forester, Ford Escape, and Chevrolet Equinox.
With dozens of listings priced under $5,000, the CR-V offers more affordability than many of its dependable counterparts.
There are several 2008 CR-Vs available for well under $5,000. While higher-mileage vehicles generally cost less, the fact that a CR-V can still be running with over 200,000 miles may actually speak volumes about its reliability.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the 2008 CR-V performs decently with a combined 23 MPG (27 MPG on the highway), according to the U.S. Department of Energy. However, some suggest that the 2008 CR-V should be avoided due to a relatively high number of recalls and complaints.
When comparing this model to others, though, it may not be the worst choice. For example, the 2002 CR-V had 16 recalls, while the 2008 model had 11. It’s always smart to review a vehicle’s history before committing, but a well-maintained 2008 CR-V could be a great value.
3. 2008 Ford Fusion
If you’re seeking an affordable and reliable option that isn’t a compact car or SUV, the Ford Fusion might be the ideal pick. Known for being one of the most affordable and dependable Fords you can buy, the Fusion’s reputation spans several model years.
However, finding a newer Fusion for under $5,000 can be difficult. Not to worry, though.
The 2008 Ford Fusion stands out as a midsize vehicle that received awards for its high quality and dependability, as well as its solid driving experience. At present, it’s easy to find a 2008 Fusion priced at $5,000 or less. When we checked, there were at least a dozen listings.
When compared to other model years, the 2008 Fusion has fewer recalls, with just seven over its lifespan (several model years had more recalls).
Most of these recalls are related to airbag issues, so if you’re considering purchasing this make and model, make sure the used car has had the necessary manufacturer repairs.
This recall affected a number of other Ford models, but it doesn’t necessarily signal a significant issue with reliability—just something to address before making a purchase.
4. 2005 or 2006 Toyota Prius
For drivers who are budget-conscious but want a reliable hybrid vehicle, an older Toyota Prius could be the perfect solution.
Although the 2007 Prius was also recognized as one of most dependable choices in 2010, it might be best to steer clear of that model due to a persistent headlight shutoff issue.
Luckily, there are plenty of 2005 and 2006 Prius models available on the market, with many priced under $4,000 and more listed under $5,000.
These model years have seen a few recalls, primarily related to steering shaft issues. While not all vehicles from those years were affected, it’s important to review the vehicle’s repair history to ensure that any necessary fixes have been completed before you purchase.
Once you get behind the wheel of your Prius, you’ll find that dependability isn’t the only benefit. These hybrid models offer impressive fuel efficiency, achieving 46 MPG combined for both city and highway driving.
While some people may feel embarrassed driving a Prius, I personally enjoy my 2013 Prius, which has proven to be one of the most reliable cars my family has owned, even with more than 100,000 miles on it.
5. 2006 Buick LaCrosse
The LaCrosse outperformed models like the 2006 Lincoln Mark LT and the 2006 Lexus LS 430 in terms of reliability, making it one of the top options available for under $5,000 today. With an MPG rating of about 21, its fuel economy is reasonable as well.
That said, the LaCrosse doesn’t have the best overall reputation. Research by SlashGear suggests that some LaCrosse models were poorly designed by Buick, with certain models experiencing timing chain issues.
However, these costly repairs are more common in the 2010 and 2011 models, so the 2006 LaCrosse is less likely to have such problems. This model had only four recalls, and any necessary manufacturer repairs would have likely been addressed years ago.
When buying a 2006 LaCrosse, it’s still wise to inquire about its maintenance history, but based on reports, this model seems to have fewer issues compared to others.
Now, here’s the good news: Despite Buick’s reputation for luxury vehicles, the LaCrosse is still affordable. You can easily find a 2006 LaCrosse priced under $5,000 on websites. When we checked, at least a dozen were available, many with fewer than 200,000 miles, suggesting these vehicles still have a lot of life left.

6. 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan
In the large vehicle category, alongside the Buick LaCrosse, the 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan stood out due to favorable feedback from its owner-drivers.
Similar to luxury vehicles and higher-priced models that have maintained their value over time, such as the Toyota Tundra, the Grand Caravan earned recognition for its dependability.
If you need a vehicle that can accommodate a large number of passengers (including pets) or carry substantial amounts of cargo, an older model Grand Caravan presents a highly affordable option that can get the job done. However, it’s important to factor in fuel costs.
The Grand Caravan’s four-cylinder model achieves a maximum of 20 combined MPG according to the U.S. Department of Energy, which is modest but competitive for its class.
Comparable models, like the 2006 Toyota Sienna, which reaches a maximum of 19 combined MPG, won’t perform significantly better in terms of fuel efficiency.
Although Dodge discontinued the Grand Caravan due to a general decline in minivan demand, the brand chose to focus on SUVs to compete with rising competitors like the Toyota RAV4.
While Stellantis, Dodge’s parent company, now manufactures the Chrysler Pacifica, it remains uncertain whether the Grand Caravan could have continued to thrive in the minivan market.
The good news is that you can still find many Grand Caravans available on Cars.com. With some persistence and smart searching, you can locate a model that meets your needs. You may even find private sellers offering well-maintained Caravans for under $5,000, especially in local markets.
7. 2004 Scion xA
While other vehicles in its category received awards, the Scion xA stood alone, offering both affordability and reliability.
As a Toyota subsidiary, Scion was only active for a brief period, with the xA being discontinued after just a few years of production (2004-2006). The 2004 model performed well, according to feedback from owner-drivers, and many of these vehicles are still on the road today.
When searching for 2004 Scion xA models, we found over a dozen available for under $5,000. Most of these cars had between 120,000 and 210,000 miles but had relatively few recalls or complaints. In fact, the 2004 xA had just two recalls, neither of which affected every model.
Both recalls were addressed through manufacturer repairs, which means that used models should remain reliable based on the available data. Additionally, the xA offers excellent fuel economy, achieving an impressive 30 MPG combined, which adds to your savings over time.
8. 2003 or 2004 Honda Civic
If you’ve been waiting for the Honda Civic to appear on this list, the time has finally come. Older Honda Civics are generally reliable and affordable vehicles, but to find one under $5,000 at a dealership, you’ll need to look at models from quite a few years ago, which is why we recommend the 2003 or 2004 model year.
The 2003 Honda Civic earned recognition and the 2004 Civic followed suit in the next year.
When compared to other compact cars such as the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Honda S2000, and Toyota RAV4, the 2003 Civic consistently stands out for its reliability.
The 2004 Honda Civic, competing against the same set of vehicles for the following model year, also remains one of the most dependable and affordable options.
It might be challenging (but not impossible) to find one with fewer than 100,000 miles, but the real appeal of the Civic lies in its widespread presence on the road. As of 2022, the Civic was Honda’s best-selling vehicle, with global sales approaching 30 million units.
However, it’s important to note that not all Civics are created equal. The 2004 model has fewer recalls than the 2003 version.
Despite having 15 recalls over the years, the 2004 Civic is still one of the more dependable options in its class. In comparison, the 2001 Civic holds the record with an astounding 27 recalls.
9. 2003 Buick Century
Since Buick is typically recognized as a luxury brand, it might come as a surprise that the most affordable and reliable Buick on our list is from 2003.
Unfortunately, most of these vehicles weren’t available for under $5,000 when we checked, making the Century the standout option.
Though not the flashiest choice on our list, the 2003 Buick Century received high ratings from owner-drivers. With only two recalls to its name, the 2003 Century has the fewest recalls of any vehicle on our list. If that doesn’t prove its reliability, we don’t know what does!
Additionally, local searches for private sellers could potentially yield great deals. Either way, the Century remains a solid choice, especially given its fuel efficiency.
With a fuel economy of 21 combined city/highway MPG, it’s not the worst in terms of gas mileage, although there are plenty of other affordable options on our list that offer better fuel economy.
10. 2003 Toyota Highlander
Our final entry in the list of the most reliable cars under $5,000 is the 2003 Toyota Highlander.
Toyota vehicles are known for maintaining their value, and given that the 2003 Highlander was priced around $23,000 when it was first released, it’s not surprising that it took over 20 years for the SUV to drop to a price point of $5,000.
In terms of finding the best value for your money, the 2003 model doesn’t stand out as either a year to avoid or the absolute best option.
Based on our thorough review of the Highlander’s reliability, it proves to be one of the top choices at this price range.
While other model years of the Highlander also earned high marks for dependability from owners, the 2003 version is the earliest year available for under $5,000.
When we checked for listings of the 2003 Toyota Highlander, we found at least a dozen options, some of which had fewer than 200,000 miles.
While the mileage may not be perfect, this particular model year appears to be a solid choice, especially when compared to other years. The 2003 Toyota Highlander had only two recalls, which is an excellent record for a vehicle that’s now over 20 years old.
