As part of our ongoing flash-tuner series in GMHTP, we seized the opportunity to test a pre-release Beta version of HP Tuners’ newest and most advanced tuning solution: the VCM Suite Pro, paired with the MPVI Pro Interface and 2.1.6 VCM Scanner and Editor software. Keith Prociuk, co-owner of HP Tuners and an avid speed enthusiast, quickly got us set up for testing on our LS7-powered guinea pig.

The MPVI Pro unit is a robust interface equipped with high-speed USB communication, which is significantly faster than the serial connections used in previous models.

It features an enhanced input/output (EIO) terminal block and scan logging keys that pave the way for future black-box scanning capability. While scanning without a laptop isn’t active yet, a firmware update expected later in 2006 should unlock this function. The kit includes everything needed to get started, aside from the car and a computer.

The versatile EIO allows integration of wideband data into the scanner or any other 0-5 volt signal. It supports four analog inputs, while the two outputs can be configured for multiple uses, such as controlling an LED or relay. True to their word, HP Tuners provides detailed electronic help files that thoroughly explain the package’s features and functions.

During our testing session, scanning and tuning went smoothly. The VCM Suite software proved easy to navigate and intuitive to learn. Reading and flashing the ECM took only minutes. For the $649 price of the tested package, we were able to extract nearly 16 rwhp from our otherwise stock 2006 Z06.

This innovative tool allows both tuners and car owners to communicate directly with the ECU from their mobile devices. It also integrates seamlessly with the latest EcuTek RaceROM features, unlocking new functions and offering enhanced control over the vehicle.

The app comes with a range of standard features accessible on most vehicles through generic OBD2 support, though not all functions apply to every model. Users can check the list of supported vehicles for full compatibility details and model-specific functions.

With ECU Connect, users can view and record both factory and RaceROM diagnostic parameters, including simultaneous engine and transmission data. Logging speeds are impressive, offering rates up to 50% faster than ProECU and reaching as high as 200Hz on some vehicles, such as those using the Nissan 370Z factory protocol.

Driver interaction with RaceROM features is enabled, and the app supports reading and clearing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) not only from the engine ECU but also from other modules like the TCM and ABS. Real-time data can be displayed through customizable dashboards, including circular gauges, bar graphs, or text. Performance testing is made simple with the performance analyser, which allows results to be shared online.

Logs and test results can be archived for sharing directly from the app. Other useful functions include ECU resets, clearing learned values, viewing detailed ECU information, and using the dealer locator to find EcuTek Tuners and Master Tuners worldwide, starting with those nearest to the user.

These include custom data logging of extensive live parameters such as fuel injection volume, per-cylinder knock, injector angle, G-sensors, and wheel-slip ratio. The app also enables map switching, allowing drivers to switch between different modes, with the ability to create and name each mode using ProECU.

Additional features include valet mode to limit power output when someone else drives the car, launch control to adjust launch RPM, and boost control to set maximum boost levels for each map-switch mode. While not all features are available for every model, compatibility can be verified through the supported models list.

ECU Connect also introduces five configurable custom inputs that can be controlled directly from the app. These inputs can be set in ProECU as sliders, numerical values, or switches, enabling live adjustments to boost levels, traction control gain, ignition timing, fuelling, cam timing, or custom map outputs.

Users can also adjust power output or engage solenoids and relays in real time. Valet mode can likewise be toggled on or off directly from the mobile device. The number of available custom input options depends on the car model, so users should consult the supported models list for details.

For Nissan GT-R owners, ECU Connect offers extended functionality. Users can log both engine and gearbox ECUs simultaneously, modify gearbox settings, and clear warning histories.

The app also supports recalibration of steering angle and brake pressure sensors and allows TPMS registration. Additional GT-R-specific tools include ECM resets, idle learning, clutch auto-learning and adjustments, as well as TPMS, brake, and steering calibration, along with simultaneous ECM and TCM logging.

ECU Connect supports the generic OBD2 CAN communication protocol, which is available on nearly all vehicles manufactured from 2008 onward.

This makes it possible to perform OBD PID logging and to read and clear DTCs for all compliant vehicles worldwide. While there are many OBD2 standards and protocols, and full compatibility cannot be guaranteed, EcuTek has tested ECU Connect on a wide variety of petrol and diesel vehicles, ensuring strong support for many models on the market.

For that, users need the Platinum version, which unlocks custom dyno-tuned map compatibility, although it may come at a higher price and limited emissions legality in certain states.
