New York City has revealed a new electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging station in the Bronx, improving access to clean transportation in one of the city’s historically underserved neighborhoods.

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) officially launched the public fast-charging hub at the White Plains Road Municipal Parking Field, located at 2071 White Plains Road in the Bronx Park East area.

The facility includes four DC fast chargers, three 50 kW units and one 175 kW unit, capable of charging most EVs up to 80% in about 20 minutes. It also features four Level 2 chargers that can fully recharge most vehicles within six to eight hours, providing drivers with flexible charging options based on their needs.

The Bronx is home to a large number of Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) drivers, with nearly 1,000 residing nearby and an additional 1,500 in surrounding neighborhoods.

To support them, TLC drivers can receive a 15% discount on charging fees by registering through the EV Connect app, making this location particularly beneficial for professional drivers relying on EVs for daily operations.

Ydanis Rodriguez, NYC DOT Commissioner and a former cab driver himself, highlighted the significance of this milestone in promoting sustainable mobility.

“Achieving a greener transportation future means investing in electric vehicle chargers that will help us say goodbye to fossil fuels,” Rodriguez said. He noted that the new chargers will greatly benefit East Bronx residents while reinforcing the administration’s ongoing commitment to environmental progress.

The new charging station supports the city’s Green Rides Initiative, which seeks to transition all high-volume for-hire trips to zero-emission or wheelchair-accessible vehicles by 2030.

It also contributes to Mayor Eric Adams’ PlaNYC goal of ensuring every New Yorker lives within 2.5 miles of a fast charger by 2035. Thanks to this installation, the share of residents with nearby access to a fast charger has risen from 81% to 88%.

Historically, the Bronx has had the fewest fast chargers of all five boroughs, with most existing stations concentrated in wealthier sections of Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn and Queens. The NYC DOT confirmed that this project is part of a larger effort to expand EV charging access equitably across all communities.

As of September 2025, New York City had 79,036 registered EVs, about 25% of all EVs in New York State. The continued expansion of charging infrastructure plays a critical role in supporting this growth, advancing sustainability goals, and ensuring underserved neighborhoods are not left behind in the city’s electric transition.

The opening of the Bronx fast-charging station marks a meaningful step forward in New York City’s mission to build a cleaner, more accessible, and equitable transportation future for everyone.
