The standard powertrain is a 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 that comes with a six-speed manual transmission, while an eight-speed automatic is optional. That automatic becomes standard on the available four- and eight-cylinder engines.

The outrageous Rubicon 392 Final Edition is the only model offered with the 470-hp 6.4-liter V-8, paired exclusively with the eight-speed auto. You can also get a 270-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or the 375-hp plug-in-hybrid 4xe powertrain, which is covered separately.

Every Wrangler is built with serious trail capability in mind, so most trims come standard with part-time four-wheel drive, while a full-time system can be optioned on the Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon and is standard on the 392.

Although handling has improved over the years, the Wrangler still drives with the traditional, trucklike feel that stands apart from today’s smoother, more refined SUVs and pickups. The four-door model rides reasonably well on rough pavement, but the shorter two-door version can get bouncy over bigger bumps due to its compact wheelbase.

Available tech includes a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, a head-up display, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and wireless smartphone charging. A wide range of driver-assistance features comes standard as well. Despite these upgrades, the 4Runner hasn’t abandoned its off-road roots, it’s still packed with hardware built to handle demanding trails.

Every 4Runner is powered by a 278-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case is optional.

Toyota offers plenty of capability-boosting features, including optional disconnecting stabilizer bars, a locking rear differential, and an off-road cruise control system. Hybrid versions add even more trail-focused equipment, such as manually adjustable dampers, but those models are covered separately.

After driving the new 4Runner both on pavement and off, we found it noticeably more refined than the outgoing generation. Even so, it still feels bulky and deliberate in a way that reminds you it’s a truck-based SUV. Out on the trail, though, it shines, helped by excellent visibility and responsive steering that make it genuinely enjoyable to drive in the dirt.

4. Honda CR-V

We tested the X5 xDrive 50e, the plug-in hybrid version of the X5, and its powertrain delivers a remarkably smooth surge of torque that feels strong enough to pin you to your seat. Yhis X5 managed a 0–60 mph run in just 4.6 seconds.

Despite its size, it also exhibits almost uncanny handling for such a large SUV. The experience is undeniably impressive, and during everyday driving, the quiet torque delivery enhances the luxury atmosphere. The brakes provide reassuring stopping power when sudden deceleration is needed.

BMW pairs the hybrid setup with a silky inline-six engine, and the result is effortless power whenever you request full acceleration. There’s no harshness, vibration, or clatter, instead, the engine delivers smooth, composed thrust and even produces a pleasantly refined sound.

While the tech interface can be a bit tricky to navigate at first, the system itself is hard to criticize in terms of capability. The display responds quickly and offers excellent image quality thanks to deep blacks and vibrant colors.

The standard audio system should satisfy most owners, though serious sound enthusiasts may prefer the optional Bowers & Wilkins unit, which our test vehicle did not include. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration worked seamlessly throughout our time with the X5, without a single unexpected disconnect.

BMW’s voice control system remains one of the most effective options available. Even if talking to your vehicle still feels unusual, the functionality is so competent that you’ll likely find yourself using it regularly.

It handles commands such as opening the sunroof, adjusting the cabin temperature, toggling the head-up display, and more, a helpful ability considering how many features are otherwise tucked into various on-screen menus.

The X5’s driver assistance features continue to be among the segment’s strongest. Lane keeping assistance performs reliably and focuses primarily on highway driving, meaning it won’t aggressively tug at the wheel on city streets.

The adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert systems are also excellent. Our only complaint concerns the Driving Assistant Professional package: the vehicle provides very little notification when hands-free driving is no longer available, and the function only operates up to 40 mph.

2. Range Rover Velar

The Range Rover Velar is sleek and stylish, but this sophistication comes at the cost of practicality. Its minimalist interior design includes soft-touch materials and carpeting that are difficult to scrub.

The rear seats and cargo areas have limited removable features, meaning sand and moisture can settle into hidden areas. For those who frequent beaches, the Velar often feels more like a sand trap than a quick-clean SUV.

The 2025 Range Rover Velar, a compact luxury SUV, is exquisitely crafted, featuring high-quality interior materials and a sleek silhouette that echoes its full-size Range Rover sibling.

With the Range Rover name boldly displayed across its grille, expectations are naturally high. In our experience, the base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine doesn’t provide enough performance to challenge rivals like the Porsche Macan and BMW X3.

A stronger option is the Velar P400, which comes with a 395-hp turbocharged-and-supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six. This powertrain offers significantly more pep, allowing the Velar to tackle short highway on-ramps and passing maneuvers with confidence.

Ground clearance measures a respectable 8.4 inches, making the Velar capable of light off-roading, though most owners will likely confine it to shopping mall parking lots. Visually and aesthetically, the Velar is highly satisfying, but it offers little in the way of engaging driving dynamics.

The base P250 engine, a 247-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic, is refined but lacks the authority to move the Velar’s weight with vigor. In a similar fashion, its handling is far from sporty.

The P400 model, with its 395-hp turbocharged-and-supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six supported by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, is considerably more energetic, yet its on-road character remains uninvolving. The suspension effectively manages the SUV’s body motions and controls body roll while delivering a firm, composed ride, but the steering feels lifeless and the brake pedal is mushy.

Models equipped with the optional air suspension can adjust ride height for either more dynamic on-road driving or enhanced off-road capability. The Velar also offers a towing capacity of approximately 5,000 pounds, sufficient for a small camper or boat.

3. Lexus RX

The Lexus RX combines comfort and luxury, but post-beach cleanup is a chore. Plush carpeting and leather seats may be visually appealing, but they’re highly susceptible to grit and salt stains.

Door pockets, floor edges, and under-seat areas often accumulate sand, requiring vacuuming and specialized cleaning solutions to restore the interior. Despite being a reliable and smooth ride, it ranks low in terms of beach-day practicality.

The midsize luxury SUV segment is crowded, but the Lexus RX manages to stand out thanks to its most recent redesign for 2023. Its exterior is attractive, presenting a more restrained take on the brand’s spindle grille, while the refreshed interior features large, high-definition displays that elevate the cabin experience.

Lexus offers a range of drivetrains for the RX, from the entry-level turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the base RX350 to the sophisticated plug-in hybrid setup found on the RX450h+. That said, the base powerplant and its automatic transmission leave something to be desired in terms of pep and refinement, as noted in our First Test review of an F Sport model.

We tend to prefer the hybrid versions of the RX, which provide smooth power delivery and brisk acceleration. A 350h model we tested was quiet and refined, though steering feel was somewhat lacking.

The RX450h+ was added to the lineup for 2024 and delivers 37 miles of all-electric driving range. While it carries a higher price tag, its combination of handling and comfort makes it a well-rounded option.

The RX500h represents Lexus’ sportiest take on the midsize SUV. In a comparison test with the Mercedes-Benz GLE450e 4Matic, the RX500h came out ahead, thanks to its sporty ride, engaging handling, and impressive technology suite.

It also bested another longstanding competitor, topping the Acura RDX Type S in a one-on-one showdown. Our only critique is that the RX500h’s powertrain doesn’t quite match its aggressive styling. Lexus also offers a striking Black Line package, complete with eye-catching orange brake calipers.

Luxury buyers value freedom of choice, and the RX delivers on that front with a broad array of trims and configurations. While it may not be as spacious as some rivals or the first pick for driving enthusiasts, its many variants ensure that there is likely an RX suited to a wide range of lifestyles in this segment.

4. Mercedes-Benz GLE

The Mercedes-Benz GLE offers a spacious interior and high-end finishes, yet the materials that make it luxurious are a sand magnet. Even with protective mats, small particles work their way into stitching and carpet fibers, creating persistent annoyances.

Additionally, the GLE’s multiple compartments, while useful for organization, can trap sand, making a simple rinse impossible. It’s a classic case of style over practicality for beach excursions.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE-class provides luxury SUV shoppers with a midsize option, slotting neatly between the compact GLC and the larger GLS. Within the GLE lineup, buyers can choose from four distinct engines, ranging from a turbocharged inline-four to a twin-turbo V-8, not including the two potent AMG models, which are reviewed separately.

This year, new Manufaktur aesthetic options give shoppers even more ways to customize their vehicle, while a $12,250 Signature Interior package brings a level of refinement that blurs the line between “regular” Benzes and the Maybach range.

The non-AMG GLE models shine in comfort and luxury, although they lack the athleticism and sporty flair of rivals like the Genesis GV80 or Porsche Cayenne. For buyers who prioritize opulence over performance, the GLE-class is an excellent choice, but be mindful of the cost of these added options.

5. Volvo XC90

Volvo’s XC90 is an exceptionally safe and elegant SUV, but its interior design doesn’t lend itself to easy beach cleanup. Fabric options and deep carpeting can retain moisture and salt, while tightly fitted mats don’t provide the full protection necessary to prevent sand from reaching carpet fibers.

Owners often report having to carefully disassemble cargo liners to reach trapped debris, which can be frustrating after a long day in the sun.
