The Corolla XSE is marketed as the sporty trim, but in practice, it doesn’t quite live up to that image. It leans noticeably in corners, and the tires provide limited grip.
Still, as a daily driver, the Corolla performs well. Maneuvering through city streets is simple, and the operation of its continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is generally unobtrusive. On twisty roads, the Impreza handles without excessive body roll, and the steering is light and responsive enough to make maneuvering and parking straightforward. That said, its handling and braking lag behind the class leaders, though we suspect upgraded tires could improve both areas.
Inside, the Impreza hatchback boasts one of the roomiest cabins in its class. Headroom and legroom are generous, particularly in the rear, making it comfortable for taller passengers.
Front seating is equally accommodating, with an easy-to-find driving position. Entry and exit are simple thanks to short, wide-opening doors. The rear seat provides adequate space for child safety seats, and anchors are well-hidden yet easy to access, making installation straightforward.
The interior is simple and functional, with large, intuitive buttons and knobs that require minimal distraction to operate. Steering wheel controls are tactile and allow easy navigation through the instrument menus.
