The Volkswagen Group has reached a major milestone in its transition to electric mobility, announcing that it has now sold 4 million battery-electric vehicles worldwide.

While the figure highlights steady progress in the company’s electrification strategy, it also underscores the growing gap between Volkswagen and some of the fastest-moving competitors in the global EV market, particularly Chinese manufacturers.

Volkswagen’s journey into fully electric vehicles began in 2013 with the launch of the e-Up, a compact electric city car aimed at early adopters. Since then, the company has expanded its EV lineup significantly across several brands within its portfolio, including Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, and Cupra. These brands now offer a wide range of electric vehicles across multiple segments, from compact hatchbacks to luxury performance models.

Europe Remains Volkswagen’s Largest EV Market

Europe has been the driving force behind Volkswagen’s electric vehicle sales. According to the company, around 68 percent of its total EV sales, roughly 2.7 million vehicles, have been delivered in Europe. The region’s strong environmental regulations, generous government incentives, and growing charging infrastructure have helped accelerate EV adoption.

Outside Europe, the company’s electric vehicle sales are more modest. China accounts for about 20 percent of Volkswagen’s EV deliveries, while the United States represents roughly 8 percent. The remaining 5 percent of sales are distributed across other international markets.

Volkswagen’s diverse portfolio of brands has helped support this growth. Models from Skoda and Cupra have proven especially popular in Europe, while premium offerings from Audi and Porsche have helped the company compete in the higher end of the EV market.

Volkswagen’s Best-Selling Electric Models

Among Volkswagen’s electric vehicles, the Volkswagen ID.4 and the coupe-style Volkswagen ID.5 have emerged as the company’s top sellers. Combined, the two models have sold around 901,000 units since production began in 2020, representing nearly a quarter of the group’s total EV sales.

The Volkswagen ID.3 ranks as the second-best-selling electric model in the group’s lineup with approximately 628,000 units sold.

Meanwhile, premium electric vehicles have also played an important role. The Audi Q4 e-tron has become one of Audi’s most important EV offerings, while the Porsche Taycan has sold around 177,000 units, demonstrating strong demand for electric performance vehicles.

Interestingly, the discontinued e-Golf, which was introduced before Volkswagen’s modern EV platform strategy, still ranks among the group’s best-selling electric vehicles despite leaving production several years ago.

Although Volkswagen’s 4-million-unit milestone is significant, it also illustrates how rapidly the global EV industry has evolved.

Chinese automakers have expanded at an extraordinary pace in recent years. Companies such as BYD have rapidly scaled production and sales, supported by strong domestic demand and aggressive pricing strategies. BYD alone reportedly sold about 2.2 million electric vehicles in 2025, nearly matching half of Volkswagen’s lifetime EV deliveries in a single year.

At the same time, Tesla continues to maintain a large lead among global EV manufacturers, having delivered more than 8.5 million electric vehicles worldwide since launching its first models.

Volkswagen’s Next Electric Strategy

To remain competitive, Volkswagen plans to expand its electric lineup significantly over the next few years. Several smaller and more affordable electric vehicles are scheduled to launch in Europe beginning in 2026.

Upcoming models include the Volkswagen ID Polo, ID Cross, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq, all aimed at providing more accessible entry points into electric mobility. Volkswagen is also preparing additional vehicles at both ends of the market, including new premium electric models such as an all-electric Porsche Cayenne and Bentley’s first fully electric car.

China will remain a critical battleground for Volkswagen. Domestic Chinese automakers now dominate the EV market there, forcing international brands to adapt quickly. Volkswagen has begun developing China-specific electric vehicles in partnership with local companies, though gaining significant market share remains a difficult challenge.

Reaching 4 million electric vehicles sold globally marks an important milestone for Volkswagen’s electrification journey. However, with competitors scaling production rapidly and global EV demand continuing to evolve, the company faces an increasingly competitive race to maintain its position in the next generation of the automotive industry.
