The BMW 3 Series has long served as a benchmark for the brand, combining performance, precision, and everyday usability. That lineage now evolves with the introduction of the all-electric BMW i3, the second model built on BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse platform.

Engineered to advance range, performance, and digital capability, the new i3 signals a significant step forward in BMW’s broader electrification strategy.

The BMW i3 establishes a new reference point in its segment, offering up to 900 km (WLTP) of all-electric driving range on a single charge. This capability is enabled by sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, which integrates updated electric motors, high-density cylindrical battery cells, and an 800-volt electrical architecture.

Charging performance is equally notable. With support for up to 400 kW DC fast charging, the i3 can recover as much as 400 km of range in approximately 10 minutes, positioning it among the fastest-charging electric vehicles currently available.

At launch, the model is introduced as the i3 50 xDrive, featuring a dual-motor configuration with all-wheel drive. The system produces 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque, aligning with expectations for a performance-oriented BMW sedan.

A key component of the driving experience is BMW’s newly developed “Heart of Joy” control unit. This centralized system manages driving dynamics in real time and operates alongside three additional high-performance processors dedicated to infotainment, automated driving, and comfort functions. Collectively, this architecture delivers up to 20 times more processing capability than previous BMW systems.

The result is improved responsiveness, more precise handling, and a more cohesive interaction between driver and vehicle systems.

While clearly rooted in the 3 Series design language, the i3 introduces a more contemporary aesthetic. Its 2.5-box silhouette emphasizes a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a streamlined roofline.

At the front, a redesigned kidney grille and narrow headlight elements contribute to a more forward-looking appearance, complemented by the brand’s characteristic shark-nose profile. Additional design elements such as flush door handles, pronounced wheel arches, and L-shaped LED taillights reinforce its modern identity.

BMW will offer 11 exterior color options at launch, including the exclusive M Le Castellet Blue finish.

Inside, the i3 takes advantage of a dedicated EV platform to maximize cabin space and occupant comfort. The interior is organized around BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system, which integrates multiple display and control elements into a unified interface:

  • Panoramic Vision display
  • Optional 3D Head-Up Display
  • Central touchscreen
  • Multi-function steering wheel

This configuration is designed to minimize distraction while maintaining access to key driving information.

Sustainability is also a core consideration. Materials such as Econeer, produced from 100% recycled polyester, are used throughout the cabin, reflecting BMW’s focus on reducing environmental impact while maintaining premium standards.

The BMW i3 includes a comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies aimed at improving both safety and usability. Features such as Soft-Stop braking contribute to smoother deceleration, while integrated parking and driving assistance systems are designed to operate intuitively alongside the driver.

Production of the i3 will take place at BMW’s Munich facility, which has undergone significant modernization to support next-generation electric vehicle manufacturing. Assembly is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with initial customer deliveries expected in the autumn.

Looking ahead, BMW plans to transition the Munich plant exclusively to fully electric vehicle production by 2027, centered on the Neue Klasse platform. This shift represents a key milestone in the company’s long-term transition toward electrification.
