In 1956, Chevrolet unveiled a concept at GM’s motor show, providing a preview of its full-size strategy and hinting at mass production plans. Presenting in a hardtop body style with an elegant emerald green finish and white interior, the prototype captivated audiences, garnering significant admiration.

General Motors swiftly moved the concept to the drawing board, entrusting Clare MacKichan and his team with the development of what would become the Impala.

Renowned for his work on the 1955 Bel Air, MacKichan spearheaded the design of the entire 1958 full-size lineup, contributing to Chevrolet’s resurgence in the automotive sphere.

Debuting in 1958 as the premier Bel Air version, the Impala offered two-door hardtop and convertible options, embodying the epitome of a full-size Chevrolet. Its remarkable appeal resonated with American buyers, with Chevrolet selling over 125,000 coupes and nearly 56,000 convertibles.

The inaugural Impala represented over 15% of Chevrolet’s total production, signaling its readiness for greater heights. Gaining series status in 1959, the Impala charted its own course while retaining the essence of the Bel Air.

Nevertheless, it emerged as the new symbol of automotive excellence bearing the Chevrolet emblem, as the GM brand sought to solidify its position in the market.

Subsequent years witnessed significant enhancements to the Impala lineup, marked by restyling, new engine offerings, the introduction of the SS package, and an unwavering commitment to performance and aesthetics.

The 1964 Impala marked the final refresh of the generation before Chevrolet unveiled the groundbreaking 1965 model year. While featuring minimal styling alterations, the GM brand retained the engine lineup from the previous model year.
